Hey!
Been trying to get my microphone to work but so far to no avail. The microphone is question is an internal mic in the Lenovo X1 Carbon (3:rd gen). Soundtest using arecord only return static. The mic is enabled in alsamixer, that is caption is enabled, and not muted. I will try to supply the info I can think of below, if I'm missing something please let me know and I will add it!

Hi! I've had trouble with the internal mic in my lenovo laptop. It seemed it didn't record anything. The solution in my case was to open pavucontrol (or whatever you use to control volume), look for the tab that contains the microphone, "unlock" the L and R channels so you can control them independently, and then set the Right channel to 0 and only set the volume in the Left channel. This did it for me. It's worth mentioning the settings didn't keep in Gnome 3.20 and it worked much better in Xfce. Now I'm using i3 and it also works fine.

First off, excellent OP, contains most of the information that will help here.
Remove the /etc/asound.conf install pulseaudio-alsa instead. This will setup an /etc/asound.conf that redirects ALSA using applications to pulse. Then go into pavucontrol and switch on the input sources tab the fallback away from the monitor source and instead to the mic. If that didn't help already (should already be visible in pavucontrol if the recording meter is jumping) and you can't switch the port to the internal mic (pacmd output suggests it is detected as unavailable) try forcing it with
pacmd set-source-port alsa_input.pci-0000_00_1b.0.analog-stereo analog-input-internal-mic
If that did help, you can hardcode that command to be always executed by appending it to the end of your /etc/pulse/default.pa without the leading pacmd. Be aware that you will likely have to move new sources i.e. skype manually to the mic input when they first appear
If that didn't help either you might want to experiment with different pin layouts using hdajackretask
