virtualbox guest doesn't show mini toolbar in fullscreen

After an update to virtualbox, virtualbox-ext-oracle & virtualbox-host-dkms 5.0.22-1 I find in full screen mode I can no longer see the mini toolbar. The guest runs virtualbox-guest-dkms 5.0.22-1 & virtualbox-guest-utils.

The host is running openbox with slim as dm.

I looked in the VBox.log, but cannot see any errors.

Any ideas?

I find that the mini toolbar is restored by downgrading to virtualbox-5.0.20-1  virtualbox-ext-oracle-5.0.20-1  virtualbox-guest-iso-5.0.20-1  virtualbox-host-dkms-5.0.20-1.

Guest Menu Bar > Machine > Settings > User Interface

or

Hypervisor Panel > Select Machine > Settings > User Interface

Re: virtualbox guest doesn't show mini toolbar in fullscreen

Yes I do have the Machine.User Interface.Mini Toolbar show in seamless checkbox ticked. And as it says this does work perfectly correctly in version 5.0.20-1. In the non-working version I did try turning this off and back on and also selected/deselected show at top to see if that made a difference. The status bar is also enabled.

Re: virtualbox guest doesn't show mini toolbar in fullscreen

A quick "drive-by" through the virtualbox.org site reveals that this has been an ongoing issue for some time. Off the cuff, you might try removing  virtualbox-ext-oracle, try it. If a no-go then do a re-installation of the package (full reboot each time) and see if either offers any hope.

Assuming the host is Arch, what is the output for $ pacman -Qs virtualbox? And the guest?

Also, host and guest being Arch, replace dkms with the respective Arch modules and give it a go- full reboot after the change of course.

[Edit] After-thought: With all the recent upgrades, it may also be wise to ensure that your headers are up to date and to re-generate a fresh initramfs image.

Re: virtualbox guest doesn't show mini toolbar in fullscreen

The host system is up to date with latest kernel the headers and initrd are up to date.

Linux minikat 4.6.2-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Jun 8 08:40:59 CEST 2016 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I tried these on the host (I removed virtualbox-ext-oracle 5.0.22-1 which makes virtual usb controller unusable).

local/virtualbox 5.0.22-1
Powerful x86 virtualization for enterprise as well as home use
local/virtualbox-guest-iso 5.0.22-1
The official VirtualBox Guest Additions ISO image
local/virtualbox-host-dkms 5.0.22-1
    VirtualBox Host kernel modules sources

Also tried replacing the host modules by using

local/virtualbox-host-modules-arch 5.0.22-1
Virtualbox host kernel modules for Arch Kernel

All my guests show the same non-appearance of the  mini toolbar so I don't think the exact details of the guests matter.
An Arch guest is running these modules

$ packer -Qs virtualbox
local/virtualbox-guest-dkms 5.0.22-1
    VirtualBox Guest kernel modules sources
local/virtualbox-guest-utils 5.0.22-1
    VirtualBox Guest userspace utilities

The only thing that fixes this is to go back to version 5.0.20-1 on the host so these do show the mini toolbar

local/virtualbox 5.0.20-1
Powerful x86 virtualization for enterprise as well as home use
local/virtualbox-ext-oracle 5.0.20-1
    Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack
local/virtualbox-guest-iso 5.0.20-1
The official VirtualBox Guest Additions ISO image
local/virtualbox-host-dkms 5.0.20-1
    VirtualBox Host kernel modules sources

Re: virtualbox guest doesn't show mini toolbar in fullscreen

Interesting. Indeed, there does seem to be a common player in this- perhaps the host, the hypervisor, and/or, as a long shot, incompatibility issues with the platform (physical machine itself). Then, again, if all the guests were updated, the update itself is a common player as well. Our setup would be identical save the fact that I don't run the extension packs. Until recently, I, too, used the dkms packages. I switched to the Arch modules a few days ago. No problems in either case. The machine of which I speak is a desktop. Arch host, four Arch guests, along with three of the "evil others"- one Debian derivative, one Ubuntu derivative, and one Woof derivative. No problems in any of them. The Arch guests were all built within the last week save one which was built over a month ago. I also run a VM on my laptop. No problems. However, I am presently building a guest on each machine. After "roughing in" one of the guests (up to the basic gui), I ran into unusual issues with the guest-iso and the gui seemed to lag a bit in response to the cursor (window selection and dragging). I'll install the gui on the second some time today and finish my work on the first. Should I find any clues that may help you, I'll post them immediately. That's all I can offer at this juncture. Perhaps one of the forum wizards will come to the rescue.

Just a thought: Did all of your packages come from the default repos or did some come from the AUR?

All the best,

Re: virtualbox guest doesn't show mini toolbar in fullscreen

Quick followup:

I gave some thought to my previous post. My experience with guest-additions may provide a clue. I found that, while the guest "saw" the guest-additions iso, it seemed to have no effect. I then manually re-installed guest-additions via pacman and all was well.

DE= Xfce4, no DM. (FWIW)

Re: virtualbox guest doesn't show mini toolbar in fullscreen

All of the standard extensions come from the default repos; virtualbox-ext-oracle is AUR, but the error persists even when that is removed. I suppose the problem could lie with the  guest-additions iso name persisting in the interface and not being present when the new version is installed. I will try uninstalling this evening and see if that does something. I will try to eliminate the hardware side by using another desktop as host, my slim+openbox is a bit unusual, but this has always worked up to now.

Re: virtualbox guest doesn't show mini toolbar in fullscreen

The hardware possibility is a reach but who knows? I suspect the upgrades have issues. Can't see OpenBox being the problem either. But, then, again, who knows? Any port in a storm as they say.

Yeah, the guest-additions issue was odd. While the media icon appeared in the side pane and all icons were present in the window, there seemed to be no effect. I attempted a forced insertion but the Device control didn't "see" the iso. I then ejected the iso and once again attempted to insert the iso. The iso was visible in Device > Optical Drives but, again, wasn't seen when attempting the insertion.

Re: virtualbox guest doesn't show mini toolbar in fullscreen

removing the guest additions iso didn't change anything and I see the same problem on my lenovo laptop which has much the same setup. I guess it must be something in my X11 stack.

Re: virtualbox guest doesn't show mini toolbar in fullscreen

Personally, I think the update is buggy. Earlier this morning I tried to help a person with a USB problem- really strange. I ran the OP down the pike and hit every base I could think of, even a few "off-the-wall" shots. All to no avail.

Re: virtualbox guest doesn't show mini toolbar in fullscreen

I tried using lxdm+xfce4 and then the problem with 5.0.22-1 disappears so it appears to be a problem with openbox or the session management. I will try lxdm + openbox to eliminate the display manager.

Edit: I started xfce4 from the slim display manager and the mini toolbar appears with virtualbox 5.0.22-1 so it appears this is something to do with openbox vs virtualbox 5.0.22-1. With openbox when I look closely I can see a flash of the mini toolbar right at the start of a VM in fullscreen mode, but it disappears immediately and the mouse doesn't bring it back.

Re: virtualbox guest doesn't show mini toolbar in fullscreen

Wow. Interesting. Personally, I like Xfce. It's a very malleable DE. If perchance you land on Xfce4 for a bit, don't forget to try xfce4-goodies. There are some handy CPU, disk, and RAM monitoring tools in the suite. Then again, you OpenBox folks are a pretty loyal crowd. wink
