audio breaks up and and gets choppy (firewire device)

hej!

i'm using following packages:
- linux 4.6.2-1
- libffado 2.2.1-5
- jack2 1.9.10-4

with a focusrite saffire pro 24 dsp.

after some time, audio playback somehow - it's hard to describe - breaks up and gets choppy like in a bad video stream.
if i pause the playback for a few seconds those issues go away but shortly reappear after a few minutes.

can this be related to some timing issue between the clock source of the daw and the cpu? maybe it's worth knowing that i'm not using a realtime kernel though.
the cpu is a i5 m580.

what i already tried:
- monitor the system load while the issue appear with atop -> nothing suspicious there
- set cpu governor to perfomance
- increased PCI latency timer
- added threadirqs kernel parameter

i'm kind of stuck here. any ideas?

cheers,
grafoo
