[SOLVED] Opera anti-aliasing not working.

Everything works fine in Chromium and Firefox.
Microsoft fonts are installed.
Same problem with opera-beta.
In Opera i got this:

Tried this in ~/.Xdefaults.

Xft.antialias: 1
Xft.autohint: 1
Xft.hinting: 1
Xft.hintstyle: hintslight
Xft.rgba: rgb

Also tried:
chrome://flags/#lcd-text-aa
chrome://flags/#distance-field-text

What's your definition of "anti-aliasing"?

Re: [SOLVED] Opera anti-aliasing not working.

As far as anti-aliasing, from my perspective I can't see a problem with either- the resolution is fine and there's no stepping. Are you referring to the headings that are present in the second post ("Main page" and "Our community") but absent in the first?

FWIW, I installed Opera and compared the rendering of the URL (https://wiki.archlinux.org/) between Opera and Chromium. Other than slight differences in fonts, as would be expected, the pages are identical.

madpierre, ofc no. I think problem was in lossy img format.
First is opera, second is chromium.

Re: [SOLVED] Opera anti-aliasing not working.

the opera screenshot definitely looks anti-aliased. I even zoomed in the shot on gimp to confirm it is even subpixel antialised.
your chromium screenshot looks super blurry on browser, but again opening it with gimp it looks ok.

There's a clear difference in font rendering between the screenshots when you zoom in, but both are clearly antialised with subpixel hinting.
Therefore I don't really understand the issue here.

However, I'd imagine both browsers would get their font settings from fontconfig instead of .Xdefaults, so you could take a look on that.

Re: [SOLVED] Opera anti-aliasing not working.

Ok, then i guess i was wrong about anti-aliasing but there is something else. Why are fonts looks different? In chromium font looks smother and nicer.
Also noticed that only fonts between 12px-16px looks ugly, other sizes is ok, like in chromium. So when i zoom in or out some page in opera font quality is changes.
Also changing font didn't fixed this.
And also in Google Chrome and Vivaldi fonts are ok (like in chromium).

Re: [SOLVED] Opera anti-aliasing not working.

Why are fonts looks different?

ooo hit the nail on the head. The browsers have their own fonts and font settings. For example, if you look at the web page's code, you'll see the "<h1>" element (tag) used for the "Main page" heading. This is a generic tag telling the browser to use the largest font in the "h" element class. The browser then displays the font according the browser's own particular font settings. Occasionally, a font will be specifically defined in a page's CSS. In such cases, the browser will display the exact font specified or a substitution if the font, by name, isn't available in the browser's libraries.

Also noticed that only fonts between 12px-16px looks ugly, other sizes is ok, like in chromium. So when i zoom in or out some page in opera font quality is changes.

One of the greatest headaches in web design is to get a page to render the same, without zoom, in the most common, if not all, browsers across an endless spectrum of display sizes. When zoom is applied, eventually the page will break down: anti-aliasing will show up (first in items with lower resolution). Taking zoom further will result in text and other elements running together. That's just the nature of the beast as it were. Using a different machine (larger display) I did notice that the heading fonts used by Opera were a bit more coarse (lower resolution) than those of Chromium. This will create a condition similar to that described when zoom is applied. Again, take a look at Opera's setup (default fonts).

BTW, what size is your display and what are the resolution settings?

Re: [SOLVED] Opera anti-aliasing not working.

Thank you for explanation. And sorry for my ignorance. My resolution is 1366x768.
I figured out that opera has separate zoom setting for every page, so i just can just zoom in some most used pages like new tab.
So i think that problem is "solved".

No thanks required (but appreciated). No ignorance on your part either. It's all part of learning.

My resolution is 1366x768.

Thanks. Sometimes there can be some odd resolution settings that cause trouble. You look OK there.

Well done.

All the best,

p/ Don't forget to edit your title with "[Solved]" if you are content with your findings.
