Too many language variants in Thunderbird's spell checker

AFAICT the spell checking drop-down in Thunderbird's message composer shows all language variants for which a hunspell dictionary is installed. In my case - with hunspell-de und hunspell-en installed - this means that the drop-down offers 6 variants of German and 23 variants of English.
Is it possible to reduce this annoying mess to something sensible (i. e. one entry for German, one for English) without having to remove the unwanted dictionaries from /usr/share/hunspell?

No.

Install the variant dictionary from the AUR which doesn't include the variant symlinks.

Managing AUR repos The Right Way -- aurpublish (now a standalone tool)
