no login screen with nvidia and GEFORCE GTX 970M and driver 367.27-1

Hi there,

I am almost through the installation proccess. The only last headache is giving me the nvidia business. My laptop runs a GEFORCE GTX 970M. When I have the default driver installed (nvidia-367.27-1, nvidia-libgl 367.27-1 and nvidia-setting 367.27-1, I don't get a login screen. My systems boots in "noplymouth". So the last thing I see is:

"[ OK ] Started Forward Password Request to Wall"

Then the system freezes. The display manager is sddm.

Ctrl+Alt+F12 gives a black screen with blinking cursor. Down to F7 nothing happens, F6 gives me the command line.

journalctl tells me in white font:
"sddm-greeter: QXcbIntegration: Cannot create platform OpenGL context, neither GLX nor EGL are enabled"

then in red font:
"sddm-greeter: Failed to create OpenGL context for format QSurfaceFormat(version 2.0 options QFlags(), ......."

No problems when uninstalling nvidia drivers.

Read somewhere that one has to add sddm to group video. Did that but no change.

My desktop is running the same arch system, has a GeForce GTX 1070, the same driver, and no problems at all (didn't had to add sddm to group video at all, just plugged the card in, installed the driver and started of).

Any idea??

THanks a lot

kalle

Re: no login screen with nvidia and GEFORCE GTX 970M and driver 367.27-1

Update.

The problem vanishes when changing from nvidia-libgl to mesa-libgl, but performance is down.

According to nvidia it is the 346 driver which is needed. However, that is not in the repos any longer, and since I am a rather newbie, I thought it's better to stick with the recommendation and not install anything from nvidia directly.

Update

I compiled the nvidia beta driver and all the related packages, but it still doesn't work

Have you blacklisted nouveau?

Hi,

I just checked, /usr/lib/modprobe.d/nvidia.conf contains:

blacklist nouveau

According to the wiki this happens automatically when installing the nvidia driver.

Cheers

All running now.

I had to do the x-configuration as described in the wiki section for nvidia optimus.

Thanks

Fear not kalle. NVIDIA recommends 367.27

32 bit- http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverRe … 4283/en-us

64 bit- http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverRe … 4284/en-us

Glad you got it to work.

BTW: don't forget to mark the thread as "[SOLVED]" if the problem is resolved and thanks for posting the fix.
