[SOLVED]Error: failed retriving file ~ Need help installing Arch Linux

I've decided to install Arch Linux. Everything was working great, until I tried to run

pacstrap /mnt base base-devel

. I get a bunch of error messages reading:

error: failed retrieving file '*.db' from **.org : Could not resolve host: **

, where * is the file being downloaded, and ** is the URL on /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist. I'm not sure if this is enough information, if any more information is needed, just ask. Keep in mind I am new to Linux. I have used Windows my entire life, OSX for a couple of years, and used ElementaryOS on and off for a very short period of time. I am booting arch linux on a USB drive. Thank you.

Hello icabero0225 and welcome to Arch! We're going to need more information before we can help you out. Are you connected to a network? If so, how? Posting the output of

ip addr

would also be helpful. If you need help setting up a network connection, the beginner's guide has a section dedicated to it.

Hi Atomicbeef, thanks for the quick reply,

I'm not really sure how to check if I am connected to the internet.

Running ip addr:

1: lo: <LOOPBACK, UP, LOWER_UP> mtu 65536 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN group default qlen 1
        link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00
        inet 127.0.0.1/8 scope host lo
            valid_lft forever preferred_lift forever
        inet6 ::1/128 scope host
            valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
2: enp3s0: <NO-CARRIER, BROADCAST, MULTICAST, UP> mtu 1500 qdisc mq state DOWN group default qlen 1000
        link/ether 00:26:2d:63:8d:16 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
3:wlp9s0: <BROADCAST, MULTICAST> mtu 1500 qdisc mq state DOWN group default qlen 1000
        link/ether 70:1a:04:4d:fe:e2 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff

EDIT: Could it be because my time zone is off? Just a suggestion. I don't know how to set a time zone.

Thank you,

Ignacio Cabero

You don't have an IP address on either of your network interfaces, so you are not connected to a network. Choose how you want to connect (either through wired or wireless since you have both) and then follow the steps on the beginner's guide link I posted above. If you run into any issues while doing this, we'll be glad to assist you, provided that you attempt to solve the problems on your own.

Thank you, everything seems to be working. Sorry for burdening you with basic stuff that I could have solved using the beginner's guide, I'll be sure to check that out first.

If I do encounter any further problems unsolvable by the beginners guide or by googling it, which is highly unlikely, I'll be sure to message you again.

Thank you, Ignacio Cabero

Re: [SOLVED]Error: failed retriving file ~ Need help installing Arch Linux

Hi,

I followed all directions, and finished the installation of Arch. When I go to the Arch menu, I am presented with the following choices:

Boot Arch Linux (x86_64)
Boot Arch Linux (i686)
Boost existing OS
Run Memtest86+ (RAM test)
Hardware Information (HDT)
Reboot
Power Off

When I select Boot existing OS, this appears:

Booting...
SYSLINUX 6.03 EDD 2014-10-06 Copyright (C) 1994-2014 H. Peter Anvin et al

This screen pops up for less than a second, then I am presented with the menu I was just showed. I googled, binged yahoo'd and checked the Beginner's Guide, no luck.

When hovering over the "Boot existing OS" option, I can press the "TAB" key  to edit the disk and partition number to boot. Clicking TAB brings up this:

.com32 boot/syslinux/chain.c32 hd0 0

I am allowed to edit it and change anything I need to. I have edited it multiple times, with varied results, none of them ending with me actually using the OS.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Ignacio Cabero

This is a separate question. Please mark this thread solved and open a new thread if required.

If you do, you'll need to provide a lot more information about your setup; eg., what bootloader you are using, UEFI or MBR, configs for the bootloader, etc...
Please read How To Ask Questions The Smart Way.
