touchscreen 2 finger touch stopped working with pen/eraser still works

I have an hp elitebook 2740p I've been working on getting arch running properly. The touchscreen was working fine with both fingers and/or pen, now only my pen is working, but now only my pen is working. I don't know which update messed up the finger touch but I'm guessing it was the same one that made my touchpad all sketchy too. I have both a trackpoint with left and right mouse buttons and a touchpad with left and right mouse buttons. In addition to my touchscreen not working with my fingers randomly my left click and tap to clich will randomly stop working, when left click and tap to click stop working left click won't work with mice either. I've tried connecting bluetooth and usb mice when left click craps out and neither will work.

I'm guessing that the touchscreen and left click issues are releted, which update it was that messed things up. I hadn't installed any programs when the touchscreen stopped working with my fingers, I had only been doing updates at that point. I've tried following the instructions in he arch wiki to get things running right again but I haven't had any luck.

The output of less /proc/bus/input/devices is:

I don't know if that is what it's supposed to look like or not, but that's what I get...

So the touchscreen is registering my fingers touch at least. I'm using xf86-input-libinput and the xf86-input-wacom-git(from the aur) because the regular xf86-input-wacom wasn't working at all.

With the regular repo driver my touchscreen wasn't even showing up in the gnome system settings and

dmesg | grep -i wacom

wouldn't output anything.

With the aur wacom-git driver the output of

dmesg | grep -i wacom

is:

[ 5.005602] input: Wacom Serial Penabled 2FG Touchscreen Pen as /devices/pnp0/00:04/tty/ttyS0/serio5/input/input23
[ 5.005904] input: Wacom Serial Penabled 2FG Touchscreen Finger as /devices/pnp0/00:04/tty/ttyS0/serio5/input/input24

I don't know what changed or exactly when it did because I haven't used my touchscreen much in linux(it work great in windows) since installing arch, yesterday I tried to use my finger to slide up the screenshield to login to gnome and it actually kinda moved but it got stuck and I was forced to reboot to be able to use my laptop again. I couldn't even tap enter or slide the screen shield with my mouse after trying to use my finger, I hadn't thought to try the pen till writing this though.

It no longer says anything in the gnome system setting about finger touch, just the pen. After installing the driver from the aur originally it had both finger and pen touch settings in gnome system settings and everything worked, now it only has pen settings and I'm getting weird touchpad issues and I believe them to be connected.

Last time I installed Arch on this laptop I was using the synaptic touchpad driver, but it was causing all sorts of problems(I read in the arch wiki gnome section that the synaptics driver isn't compatible with gnome) and I never got my touchscreen working right. This time when I installed Arch I opted for libinput(because of what I read about gnome and synaptics in the wiki), I had tried the xf86-input-wacom driver from the regular repo but couldn't get my touchscreen working with finger or pen, I uninstalled it and installed the xf86-input-wacom-git from aur and everything was working much, sadly it didn't last.

I'm stuck at this point, I don't know how to diagnose the problem and don't really wan't to mess anything up worse so I could really use some input to help me get things working right again

Re: touchscreen 2 finger touch stopped working with pen/eraser still works

After typing all that I set my laptop down, I have auto sleep and auto hibernate off and lid close action is set to do nothing/blank screen and also I have the disable screen shield extension installed. I came back and my left click had stopped working, touchpad, trackpoint, and bluetooth mouse left click had all stopped working.

Normally at this point I'm rebooting to get it to work right again, this time I actually remembered to try my pen, it worked fine. After using the pen to click on a few things and highlighting some text I tried all three other left mouse buttons and they turned back on/started working again. I feel like the weirdest part of all that is right click has never stopped working, just the left click. I guess I should add that I have left click set as my primary mouse button and right click secondary

There is something else I'm wondering about my touchpad, in windows I have a feature called momentum in the synaptic control panel, is there any way to get that feature in linux?

I can't help with the touchscreen or tablet (sorry!) but:

xf86-input-synaptics has the "CoastingSpeed" & "CoastingFriction" options that can be combined with "VertScrollDelta" to alter the scroll behaviour, see synaptics(4) for details.

I can't find an equivalent in libinput(4) though hmm

Thanks for the info, my touchpad worked a lot better with the synaptic driver, I wish I could use it. It'd be really nice to find out that it wasn't actually the problem

Here was another one of my posts, the issue I was having almost completely went away after removing the synaptic driver.  https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=211076 I was still having the issue in that post even after switching from synaptic to libinput but it was a lot less frequently. I had to wipe and reinstall and never installed the synaptic driver this time and I haven't seen the problem come back, maybe there were some files that didn't get removed when I switched drivers, I dunno

I'm a bit confused by that link, can use synaptic configuration without the synaptics driver since I'm using libinput, or is that to use the synaptic driver along side the libinput driver, or is that to get rid of libinput to use synaptics? My last install of arch on this laptop I used the synaptics driver, I posted a link in one of my responses above linking to the post about the problem I was having when using the synaptic driver.

So I really don't I love arch, its on all my laptops, I've used it on my Raspberry pi's and its what is running on my odroid. Arch seems to really require attention to details and an in depth knowledge of linux, I've been able to get it working well on my other devices but I just can't seem to get it running well on this particular laptop. All of my other devices are a lot simpler and/or there were packages built especially for them like with my chromebooks and soc.

But this laptop, with its trackpoint, trackpad, pen with eraser, and two finger touch screen has been giving me all sorts of grief... it randomly crashed like three times yesterday while browsing with chrome and using ssh

Re: touchscreen 2 finger touch stopped working with pen/eraser still works

I have got a 2740p as well and I installed Ubuntu. Pen is working out of the box, but finger is not working. If I type

sudo cat /dev/input/event16

(event for finger) the command prompt fills with gibberish, if I type

dmesg | grep -i wacom

the output is

[    6.157687] input: Wacom Serial Penabled 2FG Touchscreen Pen as /devices/pnp0/00:04/tty/ttyS4/serio5/input/input21
[    6.157879] input: Wacom Serial Penabled 2FG Touchscreen Finger as /devices/pnp0/00:04/tty/ttyS4/serio5/input/input22

Is touch screen working for you now properly? Does anyone have a clue why it is not working?

[    6.157879] input: Wacom Serial Penabled 2FG Touchscreen Finger as /devices/pnp0/00:04/tty/ttyS4/serio5/input/input22

Is touch screen working for you now properly? Does anyone have a clue why it is not working?

I forgot I even posted about my touchscreen.... about a week ago I was gonna try once again to get it working again but got distracted... Initially after installing Arch and installing the wacom driver from the AUR everything was working. The regular xf86-input-wacom driver from the regular arch repo wasn't working for me, in system settings it didn't even show I had a touchscreen. I checked in the AUR after doing some reading out of the Arch wiki and found xf86-input-wacom-git and xinput_calibrator. I removed the drivers I had installed and used the ones from the AUR and pen/eraser and one finger, two finger and long tap were all working.

I'm about to uninstall and (re)install some drivers and or try new/different drivers.... I wish I knew exactly when it stopped working, it must have been after an update cause I hadn't really messed around with anything that should have caused it to not work. I never wrote or edited any conf files to get my touchscreen working btw. After a bunch of reading I feel like I'm having a calibration issue, but I just went looking and in /etc/X11 I have a file 50-wacom.conf.d I'll have to check that out further before I go messing around with drivers and calibration.

I had ubuntu gnome on my elitebook before arch, I can't remember but honestly I think everything just worked... I switched because I don't really like ubuntu and the version of gnome I had with ubuntu gnome 14.04 had was kinda old. It seemed like it was gonna be a while before gnome got an update and I much prefer Arch.

You said

sudo cat /dev/input/event16

outputs gibberish, only when touching the screen right? If it's only when touching the screen I get the same thing. I see that as a sign something is working, just not quite right... ATM I have my Elitebook 2740p dual booting Arch and Window$ 10, only reason I upgraded from win 7 to 10 was for the supposed touch improvements... I can actually say something good for windows in general but 10 specifically, thanks to windows I know my touchscreen isn't broken, and upgrading to win 10 really did give an improvement in my touchscreen...

I'm not currently on the Elitebook or I post my outputs, hopefully later I'll be posting my outputs and have more info, maybe I'll even get finger touch again. I was gonna monkey around with my odroid-xu4(a file server/NAS running arch arm) tonight, but I think I need a bit of time away from it. I really gotta work on that Elitebook anyway, I dunno if it's a loose wire or if I gotta swap parts(thankfully I have some spare parts for it) but my the right and left click buttons under the touchpad just aren't working right, in Windows or Arch so it's somesort of hardware issue... I dunno if you've ever taken apart your Elitebook(this is my second, same model, and both have been torn down completely at one time or another), but there's a reason I've just been dealing with those buttons not working properly, HP sure didn't make their Elitebooks computers that are easy to disassemble/reassemble or in general work on...

Re: touchscreen 2 finger touch stopped working with pen/eraser still works

banucu, I've been thinking a lot about it and my 2 finger touch, pen, and eraser all worked in ubuntu gnome 14.04 with no configuration needed. I remembered specifically why I switched to Arch I was having trouble typing my password in at the lockscreen using the on-screen keyboard. The on-screen keyboard would cover over the text box for the password. I tried using gnome extensions to either resize the on-screen keyboard or use a different on-screen keyboard altogether, but I wasn't able to get it working. I switched to Arch shortly after not being able to fix the on-screen keyboard, everything was working in arch for a short time.

I'm pretty sure my issue lies in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-wacom.conf.d file I have. I'm half considering making a backup of my ssd and putting my clonezilla image with ubuntu gnome back on so I can get the conf file that I'm guessing had to exist if the touchscreen worked.... From there I could at least check out the layout and configuration of said file, make a copy, and re-image back to Arch/win10. It all sounds like a lot of work that will take quite some time just to look at and/or copy a file...

I've been doing a lot of reading about configuring wacom drivers and proper setup, I even compiled from source after removing the current drivers. I had my touchscreen kinda working for a few min, but finger touch calibration was way off and I was only able to calibrate the pen touch through the gui, and after calibration of the pen, finger touch stopped working again.

I think I need to figure out how to configure finger touch to buttons and that I just don't have it quite right
