Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

As far as i understood, infinality patches should use (in fact they ARE built around) the old v38 interpreter.

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

I've read (can't remember where, sorry) that infinality patches are now included into mainline freetype but that the INFINALITY_* environment variables are renamed.
Anybody can confirm/knows more?

See: Here

FT2_SUBPIXEL_HINTING=0 # Classic mode
FT2_SUBPIXEL_HINTING=1 # Infinality mode
FT2_SUBPIXEL_HINTING=2 # Default mode

What I did:

In:

/etc/profile.d/

I created a file called "extras.sh" with these contents:

#!/bin/sh
export FT2_SUBPIXEL_HINTING=1

Then I made that file executable: "chmod +x extras.sh"

Reboot, done.  Change "1" to whatever you like.  To confirm the setting, once in your desktop environment in a terminal just type "export" by itself to see your current exports.

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

Yes, i know that, i found this instead:
http://freetype-devel.nongnu.narkive.co … dows-fonts
They talk about FREETYPE_PROPERTIES, eg:
FREETYPE_PROPERTIES=truetype:interpreter-version=35 \
cff:no-stem-darkening=1 \
autofitter:warping=1
...but i am unable to find relevant docs.

Edit: nevermind, it was just a proposal and i misread.

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

FT2_SUBPIXEL_HINTING=1 still doesn't produce identical font rendering compared to using freetype-ultimate packages (the latter looks better imho).

ooo, did you tried the new subpixel mode introduced in upstream 2.6.4? Does it produce at least comparable to infinality-ultimate rendering quality?

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

Words like "better" are meaningless here. If you want to make such claims, post screenshots of upstream (FT_SUBPIXEL_HINTING 0, 1 and 2) against patched freetype.

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

Alad, assuming you are responding to ooo - why should he provide screenshots to back up what he admitted was his own opinion. He prefers one thing, others may prefer something else. Would you ask him for evidence if he had phrased it as "I prefer the latter"?
As for whether the rendering is identical or not, more information would be interesting, but the claim still wasn't outrageous enough to require obligatory screenshots.

Let me phrase it differently then: if you can, please post screenshots so I can see on what you mean by "better".

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

I didn't mean to make any claims, other than upstream freetype with FT2_SUBPIXEL_HINTING=1 renders differently than infinality patched.

Nevertheless, upon further investigation, I realized the FT2_SUBPIXEL_HINTING variable makes no difference in font rendering on my system. Therefore I'm assuming it's still using the old v35 interpreter, e.g. FT2_SUBPIXEL_HINTING=0, and my initial impressions were based on comparing that to infinality patched packages.

I fixed this issue by just installing the freetype2-infinality and fontconfig-infinality packages from AUR, then chose Ubuntu font .... looks great ... at least on Deepin desktop ...

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

@bohoomil: can you give some kind of official confirmation / informed opinion on whether FT2_SUBPIXEL_HINTING=1 is equivalent to infinality (presumably with default settings) and if it's not, in what way you would say it differs?

(In any case, I don't see why this project would be dead, since infinality is more than just a patchset and the last *infinality* package update was on September 2, but some definite information would be helpful in deciding what to do.)

FT2_SUBPIXEL_HINTING=1

That flag was deprecated a while back.

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

Does anyone know if something might have happened to bohoomil? They haven't been active for months: not on GitHub, their website, the forums etc. Maybe someone knows more? Also likytau, I'm pretty sure that Alad simply meant that you have to enable the infinality render in a different way now: check the note here. I did that, but I found that I much prefer all the tweaks that the complete infinality-bundle ships with -- the fonts just look much better in my opinion with the default configuration and the free preset. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I could in theory probably symlink everything that is symlinked by the infinality-bundle in "/etc/fonts/conf.d" and achieve a very similar font rendering using freetype2 with the infinality render configured?

It has crossed my mind too, but I've got no idea how we would be able to check.
There have been other periods of inactivity now and then judging by githubs graphs, so hopefully this is just a particularly long one while Bohoomil is busy with other things.

If anyone has real life contact, please fill us in,

Is anyone going to take over if B is gone? At least for the base, 3-package bundle it would be good...

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

Recently I've tried several freetype2/fontconfig bundles (upstream, upstream with infinality mode, Ubuntu version and boohomil one) and found that infinality-ultimate provides the best rendering despite outdated version. So, this packages will be actual at least half of year.
As for ib-fonts, I've updated core fonts' PKGBUILDs (all dependencies of ibfonts-meta-extended) locally on my PC. If anyone is interested, I can upload it.

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

Here is the patch: https://yadi.sk/d/yM_Rwtw-xzHEy

Install order:

  1. `git clone https://github.com/bohoomil/fontconfig-ultimate -b pkgbuild`

  2. copy downloaded patch in cloned repo folder

  3. `git apply 20161102_ibfonts.patch`

  4. build desired font with makepkg

Updated fonts:

  • Cantarell (OTF) 0.0.24 -> 0.0.25;

  • Courier Prime - same version (1.203), but used derivative with Cyrillic support;

  • DejaVu family 2.35 -> 2.37;

  • M+ fonts 061 -> 062;

  • Noto family (also CJK and nonlatin) 20150929 -> 20161003;

  • Symbola 8.00 -> 9.00

If there will be more updates soon, I'll fork bohoomil's repo to my GitHub account and push all patches to it.

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

Is there a guide to go back to the official upstream packages. It seems that the upstream freetype works fine now, but I'd really like to keep the font substitutions from this repo.

Is it just a small matter of copying the conf files in /etc/fonts/conf.avail.infinality/free/, and installing the recommended fonts?

I used this very well written guide to moving away from the Infinality dependency problems recently; I followed all these instructions and it all works nicely for me without needing the Infinality repo's enabled now...
