Trouble getting Nvidia 960m to work on a Inpsiron 7559

Hey I am using a Dell Inspiron 7559, i7-6700hq and a GTX 960m. If I delete the xorg.conf file and start xfce4 or xorg it will work fine, however I am not using the nvidia card because when I go to the nvidia settings it tells me

You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server.

so i run

sudo nvidia-xconfig

but does this does not work, its says in it's output that "No screens were found". So I searched the wiki and found my problem here https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NV … Intel_iGPU

However when i run lspci | grep VGA like they say to do all I see is

[disco@discolappy ~]$ lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Device 191b (rev 06)

but I can find the nvidia card by running lspci -k | grep -A 2 -E "VGA|3D"

[disco@discolappy ~]$ lspci -k | grep -A 2 -E "VGA|3D"
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Device 191b (rev 06)
	Subsystem: Dell Device 0706
	Kernel driver in use: i915
--
02:00.0 3D controller: NVIDIA Corporation GM107M [GeForce GTX 960M] (rev a2)
	Subsystem: Dell Device 0706
	Kernel driver in use: nvidia
[disco@discolappy ~]$ lspci | grep VGA

So I tried changing my xorg.conf to

Section "Device"
    Identifier "Device0"
    Driver "nvidia"
    VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
    BusID "PCI:2:0:0"
EndSection

But this just appears to freeze when I start xorg it freezes at "Using system config directory "/usr/share/X11/Xorg.conf"". Does anyone have any ideas? Im completely lost? I was able to use the GPU on Ubuntu with this laptop but not the intergrated graphics, and no it's the opposite with Arch Linux.

These are the nvidia packages I have installed

[disco@discolappy ~]$ pacman -Q | grep nvidia
lib32-nvidia-libgl 358.16-1
lib32-nvidia-utils 358.16-1
nvidia 358.16-3
nvidia-libgl 358.16-1
nvidia-utils 358.16-1

Here is the Xorg.conf I tried using

# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig: version 358.16 (buildmeister@swio-display-x64-rhel04-12) Mon Nov 16 19:59:11 PST 2015

Re: Trouble getting Nvidia 960m to work on a Inpsiron 7559

With this Laptop, you're using hybrid graphics, hence the Intel GPU and NVIDIA GPU's being listed. (6th core Intel CPUs have an on-die GPU)
The Wiki explains how to access the Nvidia control panel if using bumblebee like this:

optirun -b none nvidia-settings -c :8

Bumblebee and Hybrid Graphics are the things to look for if you have further issues with this laptop.

That's perfect thank you! I can't seem to reach the same fps in Armagetron Advanced with that as I did with Ubuntu, but I think I just need to find out how to tweak it.

Re: Trouble getting Nvidia 960m to work on a Inpsiron 7559

Are you using Optirun to launch that program? Any graphically intense program should be run with the optirun prefix, as that tells it to run on the Nvidia GPU rather than the Intel.
You could also edit the .desktop files for certain programs to include the optirun command so you can launch them as normal from your applications menu. See here.

Re: Trouble getting Nvidia 960m to work on a Inpsiron 7559

Yes I am running them with the optirun prefix

Intel graphics

[disco@discolappy ~]$ vblank_mode=0 glxgears
ATTENTION: default value of option vblank_mode overridden by environment.
ATTENTION: default value of option vblank_mode overridden by environment.
38860 frames in 5.0 seconds = 7771.983 FPS
39071 frames in 5.0 seconds = 7814.134 FPS
38940 frames in 5.0 seconds = 7787.956 FPS

With 960m

[disco@discolappy ~]$ vblank_mode=0 optirun glxgears
10839 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2167.750 FPS
10677 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2135.319 FPS
10777 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2155.228 FPS

The FPS on armagetronad at 1080 for intel is around 420fps and the FPS with armagetronad with optirun prefix is around 150fps. I'm not sure what is going on here. I would assume the 960m would preform better than the intel HD graphics

Re: Trouble getting Nvidia 960m to work on a Inpsiron 7559

As Nvidia is more mature than Skylake, it could be just limiting itself to save resources. Do you have another game you could try to really strain the GPUs?
You could have a look in the Nvidia settings to see what power level the GPU's running at. Do you get better framerates on Maximum Performance?

I do have it set on maximum peformance, and I don't have any other games at the moment. I plan on buying more games soon though.

Re: Trouble getting Nvidia 960m to work on a Inpsiron 7559

Do you have compositing enabled in your DE?
You could also try different compression methods listed here
There's also gputest available in the AUR. It could be worth trying some of those for strained rendering rather than pure framerate rendering.

Re: Trouble getting Nvidia 960m to work on a Inpsiron 7559

I turned of compositing tried again, none of them of the compression methods (uncompressed or compressed) did any better. I ran a benchmark with a Unigine-Heaven I noticed it said my gpu was unknown, so I wonder if bumblebee is even working hmm

I followed this guide - https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NV … ing_nvidia
And was successful in getting the GPU to load and perform to my exceptions, however I do think it would be nice to get bumblebee working.

Re: Trouble getting Nvidia 960m to work on a Inpsiron 7559

I have the same laptop and I did tested with Bumblebee. Works, but not with Steam. So I tried for many days to run proprietary nvidia driver and finally I got success. If you follow the config at Nvidia Optimus Arch's Wiki you get black screen using GDM and Startx method. But if you use SDDM setup, Nvidia Proprietary Driver works sucessfully. Here the link. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA_Optimus

Basically is:

# pacman -s sddm
#systemctl disable gdm (or other that you use)
#systemctl enable sddm

Edit the file /usr/share/sddm/scripts/Xsetup and add this lines:

xrandr --setprovideroutputsource modesetting NVIDIA-0
xrandr --auto

Reboot and be happy with the power of Nvidia Graphics and Steam, if you play it.

Sorry my bad english.

Re: Trouble getting Nvidia 960m to work on a Inpsiron 7559

I can't get my Nvidia 960m to work on Inspiron 7559

I have been fussing with this for two whole days, and I have found the root cause of my problems. There are two, and they are related. Just to give you an idea what I did on a fresh install of arch linux, here's my script https://pastebin.com/ZWNnxUT0. I get to modprobe nvidia nvidia_modeset nvidia_uvm nvidia_drm and rmmod nvidia-drm && modprobe nvidia-drm.modeset=1 just before systemctl, but it gives me an error (listed on the bottom of my pastebin). This tells me that the Linux Kernel isn't reading the nvidia device, and when I tried to bypass my DM and startx directly through .xinitrc, I couldn't get into my system because it wasn't detecting my laptop screen. I believe that this has been my problem all along.

I haven't installed bumblebee, primus, bbswitch, etc because I think I need to deal with the root of this problem first, and this just seems to muck up the the issue. Also, I was remembering that when I installed Nvidia last time, that I installed Nvidia-352 which I also tried, but it has since been deprecated in Arch Linux.

Anyway, I am trying to be brief. I can show you my outputs if you think that will help, but I am at a loss for what to do. Is there a missing connection somewhere that I am not getting? Any help is appreciated.

Re: Trouble getting Nvidia 960m to work on a Inpsiron 7559

Please open a new thread on your issue, it seems you are attempting to use the Nvidia Optimus option, then try to follow that further you shouldn't install bumblebee if this is your goal. Something I can tell you right now, remove all of those kernel module load attempts and the /etc/X11/xorg.conf and only utilize the corresponding xsetup lines i.e.

xrandr --setprovideroutputsource modesetting NVIDIA-0
xrandr --auto

in the correct location nothing else (especially not nomodeset, and using modeset on nvidia-drm is also probably not necessary), if you open a new thread, repost your configuration at that point in time, as well as a dmesg and a xorg log from an attempted start (and a

pacman -Qs nvidia

You shouldn't necrobump threads.

Closing. -- @Disco Dave feel free to request a reopen should you still have an issue.
