[Solved] input/output error when running commands

So I am able to boot in to the system fine but after some time (its a different amount of time each time) I get "input/output error" when running commands. I have tracked down this problem to the root drive is being mounted as read only. The drive is an encrypted disk of lvm. First encrypted then lvm. lvm says that is read and write but the mount is readonly.

Most places online say this is a Hard drive failure. I have 3 hard drives 2 which are new and all of them give the same response. I then thought it was the Kernel but I tried LTS and another linux based operating system and the same thing.

What hardware could be causing this and how can I figure it out?

Re: [Solved] input/output error when running commands

Have you run smart tests on the drive? Fsck'ed it? What type of filesystem? What is in dmesg and the journal?

Smart Test /dev/sda

We trust you have received the usual lecture from the local System
Administrator. It usually boils down to these three things:

#1) Respect the privacy of others.
    #2) Think before you type.
#3) With great power comes great responsibility.

I have Fscked the disk and everything was fine but I have to put it as a recovery to do it because it wont run when it is in use.

Dmesg before the Crash since it wont run after the crash.

Re: [Solved] input/output error when running commands

Check your cables and power supply. You're getting CRC errors and your Unexpect_Power_Loss_Ct's raw value seems high (though this might be a false positive, I can't find any documentation for this value with a quick search).

Please also post the full journal for a problematic session, not just the errors.

Re: [Solved] input/output error when running commands

I would do a full backup and then update the firmware as there is a more recent version (MU04) which might help, if nothing else it contains several fixes which might improve performance and reliability.

I would try to find out in which conditions the UDMA_CRC_Error_Count parameter increases as it might indicate that there is a bad cable or connection somewhere. Depending on how old the machine you have the ssd connected to is, it might also be some incompatibility between the ssd and the controller on the motherboard, or just bad support for 6Gbps. You could try to force a slower link speed and see if it helps.

The Unexpect_Power_Loss_Ct value indicates how many times the supply to the ssd has been cut without following the proper sequence, you have to send a few commands to the SSD (one of them is idle immediate if I'm not mistaken) so it "knows" or gets ready to get the power cut, so I wouldn't worry about that for now. I have seen that increase after changing settings on the bios/uefi setup, saving and rebooting.

Is there any easy way to test the power supply or cables on a laptop? I do not have replacement cables.

I already have a full backup. What device for the firmware? What is the way to force lower 3Gb/s speeds?

Re: [Solved] input/output error when running commands

For the SSD firmware you should look here: http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/support-s … ut-support they have bootable cd images you can use to update the firmware.

To limit the interface speed you should look into kernel parameters, in particular the libata.force option.

libata.force=1.5 gives more errors
libata.force=3.0 cant find the disk
libata.force=noncq best so far but doesn't fix the problem

Updating the firmware makes it be put in read-only mode faster.

Re: [Solved] input/output error when running commands

Hi,

i have the exact same problem, i have an Samsung SSD 950 PRO it work all fine, until i write a few hundret megabytes to the disk, then the device disappears, when i check SMART after reboot, it tells me nothing wrong all test passed, no error recorded :-(

sorry, did not know who embed the logs with the scrolldown thingy:
dmesg: http://pastebin.com/VzbvxaZK
journalctl: http://pastebin.com/S4rC1erZ
smart: http://pastebin.com/fdwyxZ7r

Shoud i just send the disk back, or is there a way to debug this any further?

Cheers

Re: [Solved] input/output error when running commands

The only thing I can think of right now is testing the SSD in another machine known to be working properly, except for that I'm out of ideas.

I'm using an SSD just like yours using the latest firmware (MU04), and so far I've had no problems. I've used this SSD in two different laptops and an old desktop without any signs of problems.

Re: [Solved] input/output error when running commands

Figured it out. It was the laptop sata cable had to replace it. Works fine now.

Thank you for all the help.

Hope this info helps you
