Re: [Intel] screen freeze after boot with kernel 4.6.1-2

4.6.3-1 also fixed my graphics issues. No need for 20-intel.conf, or video-related kernel parameters/modprobe.d files.

Pentium N3700 (Braswell) on Intel NUC5PPYH
linux 4.6.3-1
xf86-video-intel 1:2.99.917+668+gc28e62f-1
libva-intel-driver 1.7.1-1

Used to get screen freezes from GPU HANG errors soon after entering Xorg. No combination of 20-intel.conf or kernel parameters fixed it, unless I totally disabled graphics acceleration in 20-intel.conf (Accel=False, or NoAccel=True).

Thanks to everyone for pointing out the issue in 4.6.2. Was about to give up setting up the NUC as a Kodi machine.

Re: [Intel] screen freeze after boot with kernel 4.6.1-2

kernel 4.6.3-1 seems to have fixed my issues as well

NUC5CPYB, BIOS PYBSWCEL.86A.0054.2016.0503.1546 05/03/2016

No kernel parameters necessary. I am still using the Tear Free xorg option however.

Re: [Intel] screen freeze after boot with kernel 4.6.1-2

Problems are back with:

[ALPM] upgraded xf86-video-intel (1:2.99.917+668+gc28e62f-1 -> 1:2.99.917+670+gcac7c8d-1)

Extreme lagging when typing in terminal, screen flickering, freeze when using chromium.

Re: [Intel] screen freeze after boot with kernel 4.6.1-2

Same issue even with modeset driver now!

linux 4.6.3-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Jun 24 21:19:13 CEST 2016 x86_64 GNU/Linux
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Atom Processor Z36xxx/Z37xxx Series Graphics & Display (rev 0c)

dmesg output
Xorg.0.log

This whole 4.6 kernel is unusable with intel gma no matter if using xf86-video-intel or modesetting driver!

Re: [Intel] screen freeze after boot with kernel 4.6.1-2

@roxo...: I had issues with modesetting until I added a /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d file... see this post (this same thread, just a page back). I think it might have been specifying sna even with the modesetting driver, otherwise I got some crashes with LibreOffice.

As an aside, it's hard to troubleshoot without specifics on each scenario. We can scan through your logs, but it would be a lot easier to also have:
- do you even have xf86-video-intel installed when trying to use modesetting (log suggests not since it wasn't found)?
- any kernel parameters (enable_fbc, other)?
- anything you're passing via /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/file.conf?

That would help others make suggestions.

Re: [Intel] screen freeze after boot with kernel 4.6.1-2

There was a post in the Bugzilla bug report https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=118921 with the recommendation to set i915.enable_fbc=0 and try kernel 4.6.4, but that still results in freeze for me still: kernel 4.6.4-1 with xf86-video-intel 1:2.99.917+684+g6988b87 using i915.enable_fbc=0 hangs for me.

My hope is for 4.7, recently released. Has anyone tried 4.7 yet? 4.6.5 is in [Testing] right now, so maybe that's worth a shot too.

Just installed 4.7-1, same issue. I still have to use i915.enable_psr=0 if I don't want gdm to freeze...

Re: [Intel] screen freeze after boot with kernel 4.6.1-2

Be aware! Just tried 4.7.0-1 and as @halogen already mentioned: I have to use /etc/modprobe.d/i915.conf with the following:

options i915 enable_psr=0

However, during the days of 4.6, which I could never get to work with my Intel card, I was always able to append "systemd.unit=multi-user.target" (without quotes) to my boot line in systemd-boot and downgrade the kernel. As a word of caution: in my case, with 4.7.0 and without that enable_psr=0 setting, the laptop was completely frozen. I had to plug in an external monitor on the VGA port and then "guess-type" that /etc/modprobe.d/i915.conf file, since the screen is continuously flooded with driver errors on all terminals.

Edit: forgot to mention the good news: with this setting, I am now finally able to use the latest kernel again. I had to skip the entire 4.6 branch.

Edit 2: The following suggests trying different values (2 or 3) for enable_psr, has anyone had any luck with that? https://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/ … 82879.html

On my i7-4510U values 2 and 3 have the same effect (freeze a few seconds after gdm appears). However, with 2 suspend to ram & resume from sleep works (but freezes as usual when gdm reappears).

Re: [Intel] screen freeze after boot with kernel 4.6.1-2

With kernel linux 4.7-1 I no longer need the 'i915.enable_fbc=0' command line parameter.
All is well for me using xf86-video-intel 1:2.99.917+691+ga77397a-1
with Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v3/4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 06)

Re: [Intel] screen freeze after boot with kernel 4.6.1-2

Boy, am I glad I took the day off. Busted bike tire and, in my case, updating to 4.7.1-1 caused a similar problem rather than fixing it. My laptop display goes seemingly black after the initial Arch boot log messages. HDMI output works fine (no flickering).

In my case, blacklisting i915 and intel_agp modules from loading on boot worked to return the display on the laptop.

[https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NV … grated_GPU]

Now, however, xrandr returns:

"Failed to get size of gamma for output default"

Back to fixing my tire...

Re: [Intel] screen freeze after boot with kernel 4.6.1-2

I'm still experiencing this problem with 4.8.2-1-ARCH and modesetting (as well as intel) driver. Screen freezes after a random amount of time when using kernels 4.6+. The worst thing is there is nothing in the logs.

Re: [Intel] screen freeze after boot with kernel 4.6.1-2

I have updated kerner to 4.8.8-1-ARCH and issu is still visible. I have VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09).
The workaround with  enable_psr=0 seems to work fine for me. It is interesting that  my friend have 4th gen core from intel and he have no problem at all with 4.8.6.

Re: [Intel] screen freeze after boot with kernel 4.6.1-2

same for me, but enable_psr=0 does *not* work. or am i doing something wrong?

i have in my /boot/syslinux/syslinux.cfg:

APPEND root=/dev/sda3 rw i915.enable_psr=0

still stuck on kernel 4.5
