HiDPI Dual 4k monitors

I have a dual 4k monitor setup. I use gnome3 and I want to scale up applications. I have read the wiki page which suggests the following:

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface scaling-factor 2

Which works, great, but I want to then scale it back a bit using xrandr as recommended like so:

xrandr --output eDP1 --scale 1.25x1.25
xrandr --output eDP1 --panning 2304x1296

This correctly works on the selected monitor, but it then does something weird to the other monitor. A portion of monitor one, is seen on monitor two.

The exact commands I use are:

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface scaling-factor 2
xrandr --output DisplayPort-1 --panning 4800x2700+4800+0 --scale 1.25x1.25
xrandr --output DisplayPort-0 --panning 4800x2700 --scale 1.25x1.25

Has anyone got a setup like this and has hidpi scaling working properly?
