AUR Metis Package and General Package Upkeep Question

I would like to install, and use reliably, the package metis from the AUR. Based on the comments it seems like the package is "neglected", i.e. someone is maintaining it, but it is also claimed therein that it is unmaintained. I have come across this sort of thing before where a package seems sort of neglected and sometimes when that happens I end up regretting installing that package (sometimes not). I'm running a controlled/minimal build, for computation alone, and I'm wondering how other people interpret packages that have a bit of discord, or hullabaloo, in the comment sections of the repos. I'm ok with rolling the dice on things, but I would like to maintain my control, and wanted to see if there was a more informed opinion.

Looks OK at first glance and it is current with upstream.

So you just check that the version of the package in the AUR matches the upstream version, and that is usually enough to know that the package is solid? That's seems legit. If that's it, thanks, that's a simple way for me to know what's up.

No, but it's a start. If you inspect the PKGBUILD and it looks OK, and if you can build it and it works, that's probably enough. The alternative is for you to make your own PKGBUILD or attempt to look for flaws in the one in the AUR and report them to the maintainer.
