Monitoring for a few moments in htop, I noticed that famd jumps to 50-60% cpu usage on an AthlonXP 3000+ underclocked to 1050mhz. Does that seem reasonable, or is something up?

If you have quite some disk activity, fam can jump up in CPU usage quite a lot yes. As both KDE and GNOME support direct kernel notification using inotify nowadays, you could consider dropping fam if you use gnome(-vfs) or kde(libs).

Fam's a dependency of kdelibs

I had to stop using Thunar, my preferred file manager, because both Fam and Gamin were causing so many problems.

that both blows and sucks. so youre saying it's more important that fam is running than to be using Thunar?

There's a problem with thread race conditions with Thunar and fam/gamin. I got to the point where I was having to force kill Thunar multiple times every day; Sometimes six or seven times a day. I switched to pcmanfm with gamin, and I've only seen it happen one time in months of use. The Thunar devs are aware of this; They have been for almost two years. It seems to happen more for some users than for others so the problem apparently is illusive. pcmanfm works great, I just can't get it as minimalistic as Thunar. So the only strike for me is appearance. To answer your question directly, I want automatic updates in my graphical file manager, so yes, it's more important to me.
