[SOLVED] Screen goes black at boot during the installation

Hi,

I'm trying to install last release (2016.08.01 and also the previous one from July) via USB, but immediately after the boot I just can see few log lines and then the screen turns black, the display goes in Energy Save mode (as the video signal was absent). I've already tried different monitors (a Dell 4K P2715Q and an old Samsung SM 2032), but with no luck.

The system seems to be running since if I press CTRL-DEL after few seconds my PC reboots, so it is not frozen.

Another strange thing is that the the USB partition layout (where I burn the ISO) is quite weird:

Device Boot Start End Sectors Size Id Type
/dev/sdb1 * 0 1519615 1519616 742M 0 Empty
/dev/sdb2 172 82091 81920 40M ef EFI (FAT-12/16/32)

And when I try to mound /dev/sdb1 I get the following error:

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb1,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error

I've already tried different pendrive, but I always get the same result. I've checked that the MD5SUMs match.

In the past I was able to install Arch Linux a lot of times using the same configuration (I've just replaced my motherboard with same model due to a fault of previous one).

Detail about my system:
CPU: Skylake i7 6700K
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z170X Gaming 5
Graphic card: nVidia 970Ti
Disks: 1 SSD, 1 NVMe
RAM: Corsair 3200MHz
USB pendrive attached to USB 3.0
Display: Dell P2715Q (also tried with Samsung SyncMaster 2032B/W)

Re: [SOLVED] Screen goes black at boot during the installation

I've checked on the motherboard manual (Gigabyte Z170X Gaming 5) and it seems that option doesn't exist.

Thank you for your quick replies.

Re: [SOLVED] Screen goes black at boot during the installation

I too have this problem with my HP pavilion laptop. I haven't been able to fix it. I've noticed that if my computer has been on for let's say 2-3 minutes and then I boot arch I have no problems at all with the screen going black. I've been using it this way for more then a year (I have my boot loader post pone the start up for a couple minutes). I'm not sure what it is because I have used other Linux distros and they don't have this problem.  The last time I asked this question I had someone suggest it could be something temperature related.... Would love to find an answer as well.

Hello killkrt,

I was having the same issue with my GTX 970, and I solved it by disabling modesetting during the installation.

I would try it if I was able to mount the USB pendrive in a proper way.
As I wrote at beginning I was getting an error while trying to mount the USB pendrive, I resolved wiping the file system, using:

wipefs --all /dev/sdb

And I burn again the ISO on my USB pendrive.

Anyway, now when I try to mount the USB I get this warning:

mount: /dev/sdb1 is write-protected, mounting read-only

And the partition layout is still pretty weird:

Device Boot Start End Sectors Size Id Type
/dev/sdb1 * 0 1519615 1519616 742M 0 Empty
/dev/sdb2 172 82091 81920 40M ef EFI (FAT-12/16/32)

So I cannot modify the kernel parameters.
Any suggestion?

Re: [SOLVED] Screen goes black at boot during the installation

How are you creating the installation USB? The wipefs manpage says that wipefs doesn't actually remove any data from the device. Try something like

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb bs=4M

to wipe the USB instead.

Re: [SOLVED] Screen goes black at boot during the installation

The partition layout may seem weird, but is correct.

You don't mount the pendrive to change the kernel parameter. You do it from the boot menu: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ke … stemd-boot
If you find the current boot menu timeout too short, hold down the spacebar whilst booting -- that stops the timeout

Re: [SOLVED] Screen goes black at boot during the installation

Thank you for your support!

I've solved pressing E at the boot menu and adding

nomodeset

in the kernel parameters.

Re: [SOLVED] Screen goes black at boot during the installation

Hey killkrt, just thought I would pass this along. Alternative to just nomodeset:
External Site
Arch Wiki

Just tested this today works good. I used the pre-set settings like this

drm_kms_helper.edid_firmware=edid/1024x768.bin

, in place of

nomodeset

, to give my screen a large resolution. Haven't tried creating my own custom edid.bin file yet...
