After the upgrade to the new nvidia driver my Display Manager(lightdm) does not render and I have black screen. If I blindly type the password I login normally to a fully functioning DE(cinnamon) so the display manager works it just doesn't render and the display driver doesn't break the DE.
I tried with lxdm also and the result is almost the same: Totally black screen for lightdm and black screen with some artifacts for lxdm.
I checked the display manager logs and there are no errors.
I tried with the
logind-check-graphical=true
option in lightdm.conf but the result was the same.
One weird behavior is that after I blindly type the password the lightdm background image is shown momentarily before login in to the DE.
There is another issue with the new nvidia driver which seems related but in that case the DE or WM seem to not render.

Same for me, except I can't login even by giving the password "blindly". BTW, 367.35 is also a lts version, doh!?

Right, thank you for the info. Looks like this might indeed be the issue and it confirms my initial suspicion that it is the new driver's fault.
So basically there is no solution yet. The options available are downgrade, put up with it, or introduce screen tearing.

Or to use manually execute this:
nvidia-settings --assign CurrentMetaMode="<your metamode config line>"

Same issue for me, running GDM + i3wm. The bugs reports quoted are almost surely the culprit.
Just wanted to add for anybody reading this thread since it hasn't been mentioned here, as a workaround switching to a different VT and then switching back (ctrl-alt-f5, ctrl-alt-f2) makes things load up the rest of the way.
Interestingly, I had what appeared to be the exact same issue about a year ago, including that switching VTs would temporarily fix it. One of the posts on the Nvidia forum page is
I can confirm all of these reports.
MetaMode "extra attributes" as specified in Chapter 12 of the README are broken when specified in xconfig files in this latest release. You have to use the nvidia-settings command after boot to apply those options. Really annoying for those of us who rely heavily on ForceFullCompositionPipeline.
I'm doing exactly that (ForceFullCompositionPipeline in my xorg.conf). I guess that's probably the issue...

The new nvidia driver 367.35-2 does not fix the issue. I upgraded yesterday but the problem remains.

367.35-2 is not a new version, it is just a rebuild for the 4.7 kernel. Fixes can't be expected until nvidia releases a new version.

370.23-1 fixed this problem for me

The issue has been solved with the latest version of the nvidia driver.
