Catdoc equivalent for images?

1 Is there some nice and small program like catdoc that can extract the images in a word file?

2 Or would it be easier to get an doc to pdf converter and read it with gv ? What info would be lost ?

3 What programs is useful to pipe catdoc to? I only found less to be working.
