LXQt applications sluggish / unresponsive

Hello,

I've been trying to figure out a problem on a friend's LXQt installation, and I can't seem to get to the bottom of it.  Basically, upon logging in to LXQt, the menu becomes unresponsive.  At the same time, certain applications become sluggish when changing between tabs or even when typing.  Some of those applications are:

PCManFM (Qt5) --> going between folders won't automatically display contents / slow to display contents
LXQt Appearance (Qt5) --> Switching between the tabs (widgets style, icon theme, et cetera) is sluggish (~5+ seconds)
Firefox --> When typing, there is that same extreme delay before characters will show up

The really strange part is that if I switch to a different virtual terminal (CTRL+ALT+F2) and then back to the GUI (CTRL+ALT+F1), the problem is gone.

Logging out and back in again brings back the problem.  If it goes to a screensaver and then comes back, the problem shows up again.  Same fix, though, is to switch to a different virtual terminal and back again.

I am not sure where to continue digging.  Any suggestions?  This workaround isn't really appropriate for the user.

Thank you!

Cheers,
Nathan Zachary

Ah, sorry for not posting that information.  It's Intel:

$ pacman -Qe | grep intel
libva-intel-driver 1.7.1-1
xf86-video-intel 1:2.99.917+691+ga77397a-1

In that case, try switching between UXA and SNA acceleration. You can also try the modesetting driver for GLAMOR. Information in the wiki.

Re: LXQt applications sluggish / unresponsive

I'll certainly give that a try, but it seems strange to me that it is only happening in certain applications.  For instance, no problem at all in Thunderbird, Chromium, or LibreOffice.

Thank you very much for the prompt help and suggestion.

Oh, I should also mention that this just started happening within the last week.  She had been using the system without problem for a few months beforehand.

Re: LXQt applications sluggish / unresponsive

The intel driver also switched to DRI3 by default, you can try changing that as well.

Re: LXQt applications sluggish / unresponsive

Thanks again for the help.  I have switched to using UXA acceleration, and it does seem to have fixed the problem.  I will keep checking throughout the day, but so far it seems good.  Never would have thought to check the acceleration given the symptoms of the problem. smile

Re: LXQt applications sluggish / unresponsive

I had similar symptoms lately (using DRI2+SNA acceleration), which I think are caused by this recent upstream commit:
https://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/drive … 8dae05b80c

The commit message even _sort of_ contains a warning about the problem ("The biggest danger here ...")  Downgrading to 1:2.99.917+688+g49daf5d-1 fixed the problem for me.  I am holding off on filing a bug report since there appear to be some upstream fixes already that haven't yet trickled down to Arch.
