Because the recently updated Mate group of packages (GTK3) cause a conflict with the old one, i change pacman.conf in this way:
# Pacman won't upgrade packages listed in IgnorePkg and members of IgnoreGroup
IgnorePkg = caja-actions
IgnorePkg = mate-applet-streamer
IgnoreGroup = mate
IgnoreGroup = mate-extra
IgnoreGroup = mate-gtk3
IgnoreGroup = mate-unstable-extrathe upgrade on GTK3 seems an immature solution. After abandoning Gnome should I do that with Mate?

What are you trying to achieve? Mate has a Gtk2 and a Gtk3 version, those are in conflict by design. If you have the Gtk2 versions installed, a pacman -Syu will only update the Gtk2 version. The same goes for Gtk3. Do you want to update from Gtk2 to Gtk3? Than install the Gtk3 packages. Pacman will ask you if you want to remove the Gtk2 version, just say yes.
Ignoring packages or groups in pacman.conf transfers responsibilty to you to keep your system up-to-date, as you have to update the ignored packages manually. Ignoring both mate and mate-gtk3 is pointless, since you can only have one of those installed at the same time (because of the mentioned conflict).

I'm confused with this post too. Mate conflicts with mate-gtk3. Mate = gtk2 and mate-gtk3 = gtk3. Why ignore mate-extra and mate but only ignore mate-gtk3 and not the mate-extra-gtk3?
There is no package to my knowledge called mate-unstable-extra??
Stop avoiding the real issue here. Obviously there was some conflict in a pacman upgrade. Show us pacman's output instead of your proposed solution to a problem you didn't define here. Also, the mate and mate-gtk packages were updated on August 7th. Is that the update you are referring to? Which gtk backend do you want? Gtk2 or 3?
