I'm currently using GDM+gnome. When I leave my laptop and come back, gdm has locked my laptop. When I try to enter my password, it seems as if nothing happens, eg: cursor stands still in an empty input box. As soon as I move my mouse, I see the asterixes appear. Also when i login to my desktop environment the same thing happens. The screen does not update unless I move my mouse..
I can not pinpoint whether this is caused by gdm or gnome. I also use bspwm instead of gnome from time to time but never have problems there. though I never lock the screen when using bspwm, so it might still be because of GDM... i havev no clue.
i also typed this with the problem currenly manifesting what a p.i.t.a. to type like this.
uname -r
4.7.2-1-ARCHwhat else do you need me to post? I put gdm in debug mode but nothing interesting pops up in the logs

I finally caught something in dmesg. But the story gets a little longer:
I frequently update my system (pacman -Syu) and I have been on the 4.8.x kernels. A few days ago I experience a lot of the problem I describe in first post. (the screen does not update unless I move the mouse, this is usually noticed after unlocking GDM to resume work on my laptop). In the mean time I have already downgraded to 4.7.6-1-ARCH kernel. I was thinking that everything was ok with this kernel version, but nope...
Today I had a different setup: laptop eDP-1 + external monitor HDMI-1. I was working, everything was working properly, then I went downstair for a quick break that took 10 minutes. I came back, laptop was Locked by gnome+gdm, both screens were turned of. As soon as I moved the mouse the whole screen flickered/blinked a few times. I had the login inputfield on the external monitor which I made primary. As I was typing in my password, I noticed nothing happened... that is: no asterixes appeared in the input field. Not even when moving my mouse.
But then I moved my mouse over to the laptop display and the asterixes appeared, e.g. the screen updated.
While logged in, the same behaviour: both displays do not update, unless I move the mouse while on the laptop display. It is not working while moving the mouse on the external display.
The only way to overcome this is by rebooting. I only get this often when using Gnome. I am on BSPWM 90% of the time, but matlab does not like to run properly while on BSPWM, so thats the story.
I have also alternated between the xf86-video-intel and modesetting drivers... it does not matter. I am thinking this is a kernel issue.
Positive thing: something finally popped up on dmesg logs today:
Can someone please help me get over this or point me in the right (upstream) direction to report this somewhere?

try adding i915.enable_psr=0 to the kernel command line
