Upgraded SDDM - every file/folder not starting with a dot is deleted!

I'm at a loss for words right now and have no idea what's going on...

I was working on an assignment just now (everything completely fine), and decided to run pacman to see if there were any updates (sudo pacman -Syyu), SDDM 0.14.0-1 was the only program listed so I installed the update.

It mentioned saving /etc/sddm.conf as /etc/sddm.conf.pacnew.

I tried to load "Kompare" to check out the differences and the program wouldn't load. I assumed this may have had something to do with the recent Plasma 5.7.4 and decided to just open both files in Kate. I opened Dolphin and happened to click on my Downloads folder (in "Places" on the left) and I got the red bar across the top that said the folder no longer existed. This happened for every folder I tried to open. EVERY folder and file I had in my home folder has been deleted!

What the hell happened just now? I lost all of my school notes,  assignments, pictures, videos, music... It's all gone.

I definitely don't know what's going on, but can you provide more details -- what file system are you using, were there any additional errors or warnings when SDDM updated, is there anything in your log/journal, etc.?

Also, I would assume at this point you can only restore your files from your backup, as if they got deleted, the may be gone for good on the machine. There are some recovery tools, though, and if you are going to try them, I would NOT do anything else to the machine until you attempt recovery.

maybe your home is on a partition/drive, which was not mounted?

Re: Upgraded SDDM - every file/folder not starting with a dot is deleted!

The computer is my laptop, there were no other warnings/errors when I upgraded SDDM, and I've only got one SSD with a single mount point (other than swap).

I loaded up the assignment I was working on not more than 10 minutes earlier (just a plain text file in Kate), and I know everything was present (listened to music 15 minutes earlier), and then I was going to load up some videos for school that I had queued up maybe 20 minutes before that.

It sounds ridiculous to say it was the upgrade, but I hadn't had any issues leading up to it. I'm just at a complete loss as to how the files just literally disappeared.

Fortunately I can restore most of my stuff from backups, but I've still lost the most recent assignment which was about 5 hours of work.

Have you rebooted?   I am not saying to do that yet.
Have you tried logging out and then back in?

Do this.  Change consoles using Ctrl-Alt-F2 (or F3 through F6).  Then log in and see if the files exist using command line tools.

Edit:  If that does not help, then try it again as root
