Hey guys, after a lot of search I gave up and now I am writing this thread.
I own a Lenovo laptop with an integrated microphone. PulseAudio and Alsa detect it and I can enable it in gnome settings. I can also hear some background humming if I enable it, but there's no actual sound. I don't know what to do anymore...
Evenything that has to do with recoding is maxed out and un-muted in alsamixer.
Thanks for your help!

Some microphones need to have power routed to them in order to work.
I don't currently have an external mic on my desktop... and no laptop... hehehe
... In alsamixer under the device for capture, there is a mic boost option that may lend you results...
Also, if I remember correctly, some lenovo laptops have mute buttons for the mics as well as for the headphones. Might be worth looking into.
I know, a very long time ago, you had to select the capture device (mic in this case) in order to get it to record. What apps have you tried it in?
Things like skype and such should have their own settings as well.
