Another Nvidia drvr prob w/ kernel 2.4.24 and 2.6.3 [SOLVED]

I have Arch-Linux on my 3rd hard drive and Gentoo on my 2nd hard drive with WinXP and Fedora on hard drive #1. I have the Nvidia drivers working just fine with Gentoo and Fedora but for the life of me I cannot get them to work with Arch-Linux with either kernel 2.4.24 or 2.6.3.

The install of the driver goes just fine, the installer starts, builds the modules and installs and when completed it tells me it is successful and to change my XF86Config file. I do that and here is the /var/log/XFree86.log :

Now if I change my driver back to "nv" in XF86Config then I have no problems but, obviously I don't get 3d acceleration. Why would it say "Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration." if it works fine with the nv driver??

Any help is appreciated.

Re: Another Nvidia drvr prob w/ kernel 2.4.24 and 2.6.3 [SOLVED]

I guess two things that might help:

add nvidia to the MODULES line of rc.conf or i believe you can also add the following to modprobe.conf

alias char-major-195 nvidia
alias /dev/nvidia* nvidia

Also be sure that a symlink for /usr/src/linux is pointing to your current source before you install the nvidia driver. So for instance mine looks like this

[wdemoss@fountainhead wdemoss]$ ls -l /usr/src
total 3
lrwxrwxrwx   1 root root  16 Feb 26 04:31 linux -> linux-2.6.3-mm3/
drwxr-xr-x 19 root root 752 Feb 26 02:54 linux-2.6.3
drwxr-xr-x 19 root root 840 Feb 24 19:03 linux-2.6.3-mm3

Hope this helps

Re: Another Nvidia drvr prob w/ kernel 2.4.24 and 2.6.3 [SOLVED]

I did that and now when I startx it gives me a screen of crap and just stays there. Its a bunch of letter u's and other garbage and the only way out is the reset or power button on my comp.

Re: Another Nvidia drvr prob w/ kernel 2.4.24 and 2.6.3 [SOLVED]

I already had the symlink to my correct kernel and then I added the lines to modprobe.conf and nvidia to MODULES line in rc.conf. Don't worry, my system is fine because I just rebooted and changed back to the "nv" driver and use my system, just no nvidia 3d acceleration.

Re: Another Nvidia drvr prob w/ kernel 2.4.24 and 2.6.3 [SOLVED]

What happens when you try to load the driver by hand?

depmod -a
modprobe nvidia

Re: Another Nvidia drvr prob w/ kernel 2.4.24 and 2.6.3 [SOLVED]

Nope, no luck by loading it by hand either. I just get that gibberish on the screen that stays there (I left it for 10 minutes) until I hit the reset or power button. I feel lost in a forest with one tree, lol.

Re: Another Nvidia drvr prob w/ kernel 2.4.24 and 2.6.3 [SOLVED]

I notice that you are using agpgart module - do you need to do this? If your chipset is supported by the nvidia driver you don't need to use it....if it's not then maybe you don't have it set up right in your kernel...maybe check your config to make sure.

Re: Another Nvidia drvr prob w/ kernel 2.4.24 and 2.6.3 [SOLVED]

one thing you should make sure of is that you have the SAME nvidia driver setup in both kernels. for some reason if you have a 2.4 and 2.6 kernel installed you can run into trouble if the BOTH do not have the same nvidia drivers installed.

Re: Another Nvidia drvr prob w/ kernel 2.4.24 and 2.6.3 [SOLVED]

I have only managed to get nvidia in 2.6.3 ....using abs (compile kernel)

If I boot into 2.4 then I get prompt....not KDM.

which nvidia driver are you using?

Re: Another Nvidia drvr prob w/ kernel 2.4.24 and 2.6.3 [SOLVED]

I'm using the nvidia driver 1.0-5336 from the Nvidia website. I booted into kernel 2.4 and ran "nvidia-installer --update" and it downloaded and updated my nvidia driver successfully to 1.0-5336 and still had problems with 2.4, I then booted back to 2.6.3 and updated the driver there just to be sure. I then did "depmod -a" and then modprobe nvidia and it showed the nvidia module loaded but I still get the gibberish requiring a reboot when I do startx.

Re: Another Nvidia drvr prob w/ kernel 2.4.24 and 2.6.3 [SOLVED]

O.k....I got to prompt then did

sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg1.run

then installer does the rest......does lsmod show nvidia ?

O & assume from above that you compiled kernel...

Re: Another Nvidia drvr prob w/ kernel 2.4.24 and 2.6.3 [SOLVED]

Okay, got it all working with both kernels (2.4.24 and 2.6.3), and it works flawlessly regardless of which kernel I boot into.

Here is my Device section (videocard) of my /etc/X11/XF86Config:

# Device configured by xf86config:

Section "Device"
    Identifier "videocard0"
    Driver "nvidia"
    #VideoRam 262144
    # Insert Clocks lines here if appropriate

    #Option "NoLogo"
    #Option "SWCursor" "0"
    Option "NvAGP" "1"
    Option "NoDDC" "false"
    #Option "CursorShadow" "1"
    Option "DMPS"
    Option "RenderAccel" "True"

    Option "AGPMode" "4"
    Option "AGPFastWrite" "true"
    Option "EnableDepthMoves" "true"
    Option "EnablePageFlip" "true"
EndSection

I can now play the UT2004demo in all its glory.
