LIB_VA_DRIVER= vdpau in both cases (tested with gallium didn't work on both cases and i have no idea why so lets leave it to that)
r600 radeon with the open drivers and every bit related to HW acceleration installed.

Is there a question here? What's the point of this? You are using a tool to check video performance in X and it fails while not in X. So?
"UNIX is simple and coherent" - Dennis Ritchie; "GNU's Not Unix" - Richard Stallman

Does this show that the tool is failing or HW accel in general. Because video HW accelerated works on X and not on wayland (tested with terminology tycat on both)
Also on another system (different HW and without Video accel) videos work if i test in the same way.

Do not use the VDPAU wrapper, use the native VAAPI r600 support. How I wish the wrappers would disappear from existence, all they do is cause confusion, but otherwise have no use whatsoever, they should not be used ever.
Remove libva-vdpau-driver and install libva-mesa-driver. Though I'm only aware of Wayland support using the VAAPI/EGL interop, but I don't think mesa supports that, only libva-intel-driver does. So for now, you're out of luck.

I'd gladly remove the wrapper from my system but it doesn't work without it. Not on X nor on Wayland. Is it a gstreamer thing. No idea. I just know it is a problem.

Don't use gstreamer then. Wrappers tend to have even higher resource usage than software decoding. At least that's the case with using libvdpau-va-gl on Intel. Maybe libva-vdpau-driver is better in this regard, but considering it hasn't been developed since 2012 (that's four years!), I doubt it.
On X, you also have the choice of using VDPAU natively (the mesa-vdpau package), but that too means no gstreamer (there's a vdpau plugin in gst-plugins-bad, but it only does mpeg2 video and it hasn't been touched in years, so probably not even that works).

Don't use gstreamer then.
Kind of hard to do when E apps are mostly build around it. Or at least is the recommended backend.

I'm not to familiar with any of this but how about gstreamer-vaapi? (tbh I'm not sure where this fits in the picture but I thought I'd mention it)

Update:
Got it to work with the vaapi without the wrapper. LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME has to be set to r600 and not gallium that is mentioned in the wiki. :duh:
However the video performance is crap be it X or wayland. The video is choppy and pretty much making it unusable

Things have changed with mesa 12, the wiki will need to be updated. Now you actually don't need to set any variables, it's all automatic.
If you insist on gstreamer, you're better off with software decoding. Or you dump gstreamer and go with mpv, there you'll have excellent VAAPI and VDPAU support. VDPAU is X only (a limitation of libvdpau). VAAPI works in Wayland too, but only with Intel, I just found the confirmation that it's not implemented for AMD: https://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/ … 24054.html

Weirdly enough with LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME=r600 it works on wayland also. Althought its choppy.
I'll try without a variable and see how it goes.

Yeah, gstreamer supports native VAAPI in Wayland. mpv in X gives you a choice between native output (--hwdec=vaapi --vo=vaapi) or EGL interop with GLX fallback (--hwdec=vaapi --vo=opengl), while in Wayland only the EGL interop is available. It's an implementation detail, the mpv devs prefer their opengl output, so they haven't bothered with the native vaapi output in Wayland.

Without setting LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME=r600 you get it to work on X but not on WL.
HW accel is such a fucked up area in Linux.
Anyway. ![]()
