Cannot get any DM to work

So I normally use GDM and Gnome 3.  For a bit over a month now GDM has not been workinG; at first I thought it was isolated to GDM, but I tried a couple other DM such as SDDM and lightDM and could not get them to work properly.  I also tried the LTS kernel to see if that might help things but nothing changed.  Curiously GDM will actually boot to desktop if I enable automatic user login however if I subsequently logout it crashes just as when I have auto login disabled at first boot.  startx works fine as well. Preferably I would like to stick with GDM if possible so I will try to focus there.  Not 100% sure which logs are relevant but to start here is the output of journalctl -eu gdm.service

Re: Cannot get any DM to work

are you using Automatic login or Passwordless login ?

Have you changed things in /usr/share/xsessions ?

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Re: Cannot get any DM to work

Automatic login works passwordless doesn't. basically the DM is incapable of displaying the user accounts page but it can safely bypass it altogether using automatic login with no issues.  As far as xsessions I did have i3 installed and uninstalled in recently so the corresponding session would have been removed but other than that I have not made any manual changes.

Re: Cannot get any DM to work

That suggests the problems are PAM related and i know very little about those.

Are there .pacnew or .pacsave files you haven't processed yet ?
