Intermittent NVRM errors causing Chrome to fail with nvidia driver

I'm using nvidia drivers from extra/nvidia with a GTX 750 Ti. I notice that when I'm running Google Chrome (some non-deterministic time after I start Chrome), I can get errors in dmesg like the following and the Chrome window starts to not redraw properly (When the Chrome window regains focus, most of it is black or garbled.). Sometimes, KDE is also affected and claims to perform a graphics restart. If KDE doesn't do that restart, I have to relogin to make the problem go away (restarting Chrome is useless). Apparently other apps are not affected. At least Konsole, Okular and the the desktop seem fine and redraw properly.

What problem might this be? A bug in the driver? A bug in Chrome? I misunderstanding between nvidia devs and chrome devs? How stable is nouveau? Last time I tried it years ago on another distro, it seemed quite buggy.

In any case, based on my understand of sound systems design, though I don't know Linux specifics, it's surprising that Chrome, a mere userspace app, can mess up the graphics driver, which I would expect to belong to the kernel.

Re: Intermittent NVRM errors causing Chrome to fail with nvidia driver

Looks like texture memory access failure.
Could be due to an underpowered system. You can use nvidia-smi (and possibly nvidia-settings) to underclock or constrain the maximum power range of the GPU.
This depends on the actual device, but you must have CoolBits set to a value n | n&24==24 in Xorg conf, eg.

/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf

Section "Device"
    Identifier "Default nvidia Device"
    Driver "nvidia"
    Option "NoLogo" "True"
    Option "CoolBits" "24"
    Option "TripleBuffer" "True"
EndSection
