XFCE4 - GKSU issue (dbus related)

Hallo,
after updating the system recently GKSU and GKSUDO do not work properly anymore. When i do a 'gksudo mousepad' the mousepad window freezes (not responding). Doing a 'gksu mousepad' gives this repeating output:

(mousepad:1071): dconf-WARNING **: failed to commit changes to dconf: Fehler beim Erzeugen der Befehlszeile »dbus-launch --autolaunch=59b9460123874598b9fa4606931089d9 --binary-syntax --close-stderr«:Der Kindprozess wurde mit Status 1 beendet

(mousepad:1071): GtkSourceView-CRITICAL **: gtk_source_style_scheme_get_id: assertion 'GTK_IS_SOURCE_STYLE_SCHEME (scheme)' failed

(mousepad:1071): GtkSourceView-CRITICAL **: gtk_source_style_scheme_manager_get_scheme: assertion 'scheme_id != NULL' failed

(mousepad:1071): GtkSourceView-CRITICAL **: gtk_source_style_scheme_get_id: assertion 'GTK_IS_SOURCE_STYLE_SCHEME (scheme)' failed

(mousepad:1071): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_variant_new_string: assertion 'string != NULL' failed

(mousepad:1071): GtkSourceView-CRITICAL **: gtk_source_style_scheme_get_id: assertion 'GTK_IS_SOURCE_STYLE_SCHEME (scheme)' failed

If i do 'gksudo thunar' it comes up but doesn't load/save any config (window size, details view..). Its always on stock settings when started with gksu/gksudo. Logging into the root account with startx thunar works properly though.

This all worked properly before the update (~2-3 days). Tested on two systems.

I didn't find anything in the logs (journalctl, dmesg). It just says 'started session' and 'stopped session'.

Does 'gksudo mousepad' or 'gksudo thunar' work properly for anyone in XFCE4?

Edit: Downgrading dbus from 1.10.10-3 to 1.10.8-1 fixes the problem.

gksudo mousepad doesn't in XFCE4 after latest -Syu, it launches but is grey can't type anything in it. gksudo thunar works with minor glib-gobject complaint or two on closing. Launching mousepad from root cli to a file (like /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist) never opens the file and the terminal goes on for maybe infinity (i killed it after 5 minutes+) scrolling tons of dbus-launch and gtk errors.

Downgrading dbus not an option for me sad so installed leafpad for now.

Re: XFCE4 - GKSU issue (dbus related)

@ Scimmia, I'm confused, the only thing in my /etc/systemd/user/sockets.target.wants/ is pulseaudio.socket link to /usr/lib/systemd/user/pulseaudio.socket, (which might explain why VBox guest audio quit working?), and I always merge pacnew files, so currently have none. pacman.log doesn't mention having to change anything with update of dbus other than dbus removes libdbus, granted not a minor change as seen in attempt to downgrade without forcing but pacman is otherwise silent about affects. The only mention of change in pacman.log referenced a config file that didn't exist for nfs-utils in my current build:

                                  &launch_stderr,
                                  &exit_status,
                                  error))
    {
      goto out;
    }

  if (!g_spawn_check_exit_status (exit_status, error))
    {
      g_prefix_error (error, _("Error spawning command line '%s': "), command_line);
      goto out;
    }

Also, that's the only place I found it in. Even if the error didn't come from there, there can be dbus-launch-calls from glib2? So should the X11 support in dbus be enabled after all?

Re: XFCE4 - GKSU issue (dbus related)

How can we get the g_print output from gdbusaddress.c? I've tried setting env variable G_MESSAGES_DEBUG=all but doesn't help. Is the debug handler completely disabled on release builds?
I can trigger the bug with sudo dconf write /org/xfce/mousepad/preferences/window/menubar-visible true but there's no output from libglib-2.0.so (that is shown as dependency via strace indeed).

Re: XFCE4 - GKSU issue (dbus related)

I'm now on Cinnamon and when doing a 'sudo nemo' the same error appears. I have no clue where to look for that 'dbus-launch' command. Its not possible to properly run a root explorer at this time. You can't change any options. They are locked magically. Somewhere dbus-conf must pick that up. I also tested that with a newly created user but that doesn't change anything.

Its very annoying. Most admin steps have to be done in shell now.

Re: XFCE4 - GKSU issue (dbus related)

The work-around in this link https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=217030 seems to work for mousepad.

gksu dbus-launch mousepad

I couldn't get the "--exit-with-session" operand to work though, maybe typo? need to read up on it otherwise root htop and kill mousepad after closing mousepad.

EDIT: thanks Maniaxx, the

sudo dbus-launch --exit-with-session mousepad

works and the session is gone from htop after closing the terminal.

Re: XFCE4 - GKSU issue (dbus related)

Nice, works indeed.

sudo dbus-launch --exit-with-session mousepad
sudo dbus-launch --exit-with-session thunar

For gksudo you might need to set it in single quotes. But i think 'sudo' is sufficient here and seems to work better.
Edit: Right, for desktop we need gksudo and that doesn't work here too. smile
Edit2: gksu seems to work (with Thunar) but not gksudo. Weird...
gksu 'dbus-launch --exit-with-session thunar'

Re: XFCE4 - GKSU issue (dbus related)

looks like that's the workaround for now unless can figure out how to patch dbus install to work like the older version did. Etherape produce similar results when started without launching dbus, but does start and provides an error message clue as what to do:

Client failed to connect to the D-BUS daemon:
Using X11 for dbus-daemon autolaunch was disabled at compile time, set your DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS instead

EDIT: patching dbus to work like previous version (& libdbus) reading the dbus documentation isn't right direction to go in (also here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=217281), but looks like intended dissuasion to launching gui's in root as opposed to using sudo (preferred) - for now I just put a couple aliases in ~/.zshrc for launching etherape, mousepad, and thunar as sudo using the d-bus launch operand until i get a better understanding of dbus and "set your DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS". The dbus gvfs problem connecting to home network need more research...

Re: XFCE4 - GKSU issue (dbus related)

My "gksu thunar" command started not saving settings per this discussion. I had a panel shortcut for gksu thunar. My workaround was to create a new bash alias. This worked as expected when ran in an xfce4-terminal. The alias just removed the space in the original command because of no spaces allowed in bash alias, and its easy to remember.

alias gksuthunar='sudo dbus-launch --exit-with-session thunar'

Now the panel shortcut, when the command was edited from "gksu thunar" to "gksuthunar" did not work. After a little testing, figured out the following which does work as expected.

bash -ic "gksuthunar"
