Spotify client does not exit properly

Hi,

So I've been having an issue with Spotify's Linux client since I installed it months ago. For some reason after some continuous playback the process does not exit with the GUI. Closing the GUI leaves a rogue process in the background still playing but not responding to exit commands (SIGTERM). Most of the times SIGKILL can take care of it, but not always. The rogue process pollutes memory and even allows for other Spotify instances to run concurrently. Sometimes if my laptop goes to lockscreen or sleep, I can't log back in until I 'killall spotify' from another console. This is very annoying.

I wonder if anyone else has run into this and knows of a remedy. I also posted an issue on the Spotify Community and I urge people to vote it up in hope someone will notice - here:

I am using Gnome if that matters.

Thanks.

Re: Spotify client does not exit properly

This sounds like a known issue with gnome.  You can read about it and some work arounds here:

Re: Spotify client does not exit properly

Seems very similar, indeed. But since my issue only happens with Spotify when closing from it from Gnome, that still makes me think Spotify did not implement their signal response properly or am I missing something?

Re: Spotify client does not exit properly

I'm not sure.  What do you mean when you say you are "closing it from Gnome"?  Do you actually close/exit spotify first, then shut down gnome?  Or do you just exit out of your Gnome session expecting Spotify will also close?

If it's the former, then this is indeed a different problem, but if it's the latter, it sounds the same.  Gnome seems to not send the proper X11 events to all running clients when it shuts down, so the code I put in the other thread is a way to work around that problem.

Re: Spotify client does not exit properly

As I tried to describe, I guess badly, yes. I close Spotify from Gnome and the window closes, but the process 'spotify' persists as a rogue/parentless process. Music continues to play without a GUI window present. Launching Spotify client again results in a separate 'spotify' instance that does not interrupt the previous one. Trying to kill this rogue process only succeeds with SIGKILL some of the time and I guess this is why sleep/lockscreen/resume is affected. I can only really be sure it's dead when I call 'killall spotify' as root.

Ah, sorry, no you explained it well enough, I just missunderstood - this is not the problem I linked to, sorry.

Re: Spotify client does not exit properly

I've been experiencing this same problem over the last couple of months closing Spotify via the X in the window frame on GNOME. Happens rarely though.
