[Solved] Upgrade just crashed my system

Latest update (systemv related) crashed my system:

What do you mean by "systemv related"? Are you still on initscripts?

this is fail in initramfs. try to boot in the fallback mode. also, you need to rebuild it using https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/mkinitcpio

There should be an option in your bootloader menu that says something-fallback. Try to boot that, but most likely you will have to rebuild your initramfs.

I am using rEFInd loader and don't see any "fallback" options.

Here is what I have (editable) in rEFInd Line Editor:

root=UUID=2e996be4-41bf-4ecd-8bca-c0e4c5067971 initrd=boot\initramfs-linux.img

How to modify it to get fallback loaded?

REFInd#For_kernels_automatically_detected_by_rEFInd

Subsequent lines will create entries in a submenu accessible using +, F2, or Insert.

Edit:
If pressing F2 still only shows a single entry press F2 again to edit the entry and alter the initrd parameter that way.

Even running mkinitcpio could fail to make the pc bootable as the vmlinuz-linux could have been damaged, but I don't think this is likely.

Hello!

I've run on my computer today

pacman -Syu

and my system crashed during the installation as well. After a couple of minutes enjoying the black screen, I turned off the machine by pressing and holding the power button. The problem was not persistent and gone booting again. If that wouldn't have solved the issue, I would have boot from an USB stick and chroot (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Change_root) into my system to execute there:

mkinitcpio -p linux

Maybe this could help you.

Me@Work: your issue is unrelated. Your computer didn't crash, the systemd update triggered a (known) dirty re-exec. Switching back to the TTY X was running on would have "solved" it.

I loaded installation media from USB, chrooted, run mkinitcpio -p linux, and that's what I get now:

ERROR: unable to find root device 'UUID=2e996be4-41bf-4ecd-8bca-c0e4c5067971' .

Type 'exit' to try and continue booting

[rootfs ]#

System is frozen at the mooment, doesn't accept any entry.

Few sanity checks
From the live/install media what is the output of

# blkid

From within the chroot

$ pacman -Qkk linux

There should be no mention of /boot/vmlinuz-linux in the output
Also please post the entries from /var/log/pacman.log for your last update.

I can't start browser in chroot. I need to retype huge amount of information into another computer.

How can I alleviate the issue?
