[SOLVED] Live boot package installation problem: mirrorlist gives 404

Following the arch installation guide, I arrived at the step where I had to download packages. I couldn't get pacstrap to run. All of the mirrors gave 404 errors. I tried using a couple of different mirrors to no avail. I tried running pacman -Syu, -Syy and a couple of other options I found online, but they gave the same errors. I showed one error below, but the same error appeared for all the different mirrors I have tried. I have also noticed that even though I can ping websites (like ping google.com), putting http:// or https:// at the beginning of addresses causes problems. I would greatly appreciate any help!

error: failed retrieving file 'core.db' from archlinux.unixheads.org : The requested URL returned error: 404

Are you perhaps behind a firewall or proxy?

That isn't in the current mirrorlist. What iso are you using? Is this Arch or spinoff?

Hi all, thank you for the swift replies! So jasonwryan: I am using arch, I got it by downloading through the torrent links on arch's website. I included that mirror as an example, after I tried to enter some mirrors manually to the /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist file. I tried a ton of mirrors, and all of them get the same result. I tried them from "https://www.archlinux.org/mirrors/status/" here. dockland: I might be, but since I am on not on a personal network (it's an institutional network) I don't know what I can do about that?

You say you can ping google, but can you ping the mirrors?  If so, can you curl from the mirrors?

When you ping google are you sure it is google responding and not a redirected institutional page (requiring a web-form login)?

Folks I found out the problem. So I am on an institutional network, so I had to register the machine. I could ping websites, so I thought I had a connection, but I think as dockland said, I was prevented by a firewall for http. I think ping uses something else, so it was able to go through, thank you for the help, I'll mark this down as solved.
