Just wondering. Are there any plans of ever getting gamin out of testing? I've been using it since last year, and have never had problems with it.

Ah, thanks alot! That clarifies a few things

So, I guess I can replace gamin with fam, but without the need of starting the fam daemon (since I don't care for network monitoring) anyway.

does anyone know if famd has to run if i'm not using gnome or kde libs?
fam without famd running works in xfce for me, but what if i use fvwm or another simple wm?
will it still work?
gamin does, but JGC only talked about gnome-vfs and kde-libs and not everybody uses that...

That depends what apps you use in that light enviroment - if you don't run any apps that might take advantage of it, you can turn it off. If you don't think you need your apps that might take advantage of FAM to monitor what files are changed/deleted/added either, you can turn it off.

of course i'm talking about apps that use fam for file monitoring. if i didn't, why would i want to install fam?

The point is that both gnome-vfs and kde-libs are build to use inotify which is a kernel subsystem that provides file system event notification.
Other applications (/libs) besides gnome-vfs kdelibs may or may not support inotify. It's really application specific.

Rigth now im using gamin, if i install fam, Im still not sure if i need to run the daemon. Only app i have that needs it is thunar.

yeah, i had gamin only for thunar, too. i have to have the fam deamon running, or else thunar won't update the folders.
but i moved to fam now, since gamin is going to be removed
i thought it was better to only have gamin installed using inotify instead of having fam and portmap running as two additional deamons...

Yes that was exactly what i was thinking, why run 2 daemons when gamin does the same thing. Well looks like I will also switch to fam+portmap. :?

so the thunar devs should add inotify support to their file manager. Maybe you can file a feature request to the thunar people. Gamin does exactly what the kernel is able to do. Fam adds network support.
Of course you can always use your own packages

i asked benny (thunar dev) about inotify support for thunar and he said that it won't be added, since thunar isn't developed for linux only, but inotify only exists in the linux world. that's why he'll stick with fam.

That's ridiculous, last I checked the BSDs were also working on inotify compatibility, and just because it's not on every system doesn't mean you can't provide optional support for it!

(BTW, doesn't FAM have some security issues?)

Edit: You know, I really hope someone forks Thunar over this.
