Hello,
I've received a new us keyboard to replace my old british one. I've switched from the gb/extd layout and variant to us/altgr-intl (to write french) as it seems to be the most popular.
However, the ` key is not a dead key. For example to write a 'à'. I need to press altgr + ` and then 'a'. It's a bit inconvenient, the extd british variant had a dead key instead. I've also tested the international layout on Windows and the ` is also a dead key which therefore does not require to press altgr to get a grave accent.
Is there a different variant or option to get ` as permanent dead key?

I think you want “US International with dead keys”, ie us-intl, according to /usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/base.lst (see https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ke … ard_layout )
Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU E3400 @ 2.60GHz, x86_64. AURs.

Unfortunately this one has dead keys for everything. Even ' and " are dead keys... This is a pain. So I will stick with altgr-intl and adapt myself to use altgr + ` to make grave accent
Thanks anyway

Maybe this is solved already, but I didn't found this documented on the Wiki or in another forum thread. I used this:
$ setxkbmap -rules evdev -model evdev -layout us -variant altgr-intl
Extracted from : Altgr-intl varant
I think it works on Xorg sessions only, but, I didn't give it a try outside any session.
Notice that ' and " are not dead keys. So you just have to press them once to get ' or ". The other dead keys like á are obtained by Altgr + a instead of ' + a .
If you want to set it as default (withot a display manager) insert that in your ~/.xinitrc file:
<editor of your choice> ~/.xinitrc

This is what the OP used but was not entirely happy with… 3½ years ago.
Please don't necrobump and esp. not w/ PSAs, because oc. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xo … _setxkbmap is documented and the actual layouts and variants are a matter of individual preference.

Yeah, it could be late, but I actually needed this information recently, and this layout is difficult to obtain. Also, this is the proposal of the community, help each other with their problems because other people could use it in the future.
Ammm, also. How can I put this problem as [SOLVED]? I'm new doing this.

As you aren't the original poster you can't, which is one of the reasons why necrobumping is discouraged as it's quite unclear whether your solution would even help the OP.
Closing this old topic. @markand please report the thread for reopening should you have further interest in this.
