Hi everybody,
after updaten my system yesterday (about 176 packages) I have a heavy problem with GNOME. After startup, I only get a black screen with a mousepointer on it. I can Start and use apps via keyboard, but the screen stays black.
Only a few pixels get bright.
The last update before was on 10th October 2016
My system is:
Arch (updated)
Catalyst 15.12-4
Radeon HD 6870
Gnome (updated)
What can I Do?
P.S. Terminal 7 shows only a " _ "
Kind regards
Sven

Are you using lightdm? I have the same problem, since I updated today, when lightdm starts, I only get a black screen with the mouse pointer. In my system it looks like it's a lightdm problem: I can manually start the X session by editing a proper .xinitrc file and calling startx.
This problem might also be related to this one, but I'm not sure.

I'm not using lightdm, I use GDM.
I also can start via startx but this brings me to the black screen with the mousepointer on it - I would sag there is no difference.

Hum, it looks unrelated then, sorry to bother

In the past when I used the Catalyst driver, updates to GNOME caused this issue. What I'll have to ask is have you attempted to reinstall Catalyst or try using the open source driver to see if that causes any results.
Another issue that I can think of is that GNOME now defaults to a Wayland session and perhaps you need to change it to Xorg (the gear icon when you log in via GDM). Select GNOME on Xorg.
I don't want to work. I want to bang on the drum all day.

I already reinstalled catalyst. Changing to open source isn't easy I think.
I selected automatic login and can not change it. Deleting the entries in the custom config did not work. So i Do not See the GDM screen...no option to change it to xorg. I already set the wayland entry to false...
Result...the same black screen with the same mousepointer
