ALSA errors. No sound.

I've been having these problems for quite a while, but I have been using mostly oss for sound playback.  However, I need alsa for certain things.  Here is what happens when I try to use alsa.   It happens in mplayer, mpd, etc.  This basically started when I followed the dmix wiki guide, and when I undid all of those changes, these problems still persisted.

[sgillespie@sg-arch01 ~]$ aplay 1.WAV
ALSA lib pcm_direct.c:849:(snd_pcm_direct_initialize_slave) requested or auto-format is not available
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:874:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to initialize slave
aplay: main:547: audio open error: Invalid argument

What happens when you run this command as root?  Have you added your user to the audio group? As root have you run alsaconf?

"Oh, they have the internet on computers now."

Interestingly, it plays as root.  However, I am in the audio group, and alsaconf was ran.

EDIT:  I removed .asoundrc, and now it is working...
