Blank, unresponsive screen after quitting X

I'm using Arch Linux on a Surface Pro 4.  I've just managed to build a kernel with a working touchscreen, per the instructions found here and here.  I am not using a DM of any sort; I initialize my desktop environments directly using startx.

Since I started using this kernel (which is based on Linux 4.6.7, not the latest one), I've had the problem where when I exit any desktop environment, the screen goes blank, and is completely unresponsive.  I have tried typing "reset" or "killall Xorg" and nothing happens.  I have tried pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1-6 and nothing happens.  I have tried Ctrl-C and Ctrl+Alt+Del and nothing happens.  I am forced to reboot using the hardware power button instead.

Typing systemctl reboot into the command line seems to work as normal.

Here is Xorg.0.log:

EDIT: The screen is not merely blank after I quit X; it's off completely.  The keyboard lights up though, again, nothing I do elicits any sort of response out of the device.

Re: Blank, unresponsive screen after quitting X

Is the xorg log dated? It says there's no wacom module and intel and modesetting driver fail, there's no /dev/dri/card0 and the server terminates with an error.
Can you ssh into the "dead" machine for a live inspection?

Re: Blank, unresponsive screen after quitting X

ssh is a good idea.  I have another computer I can dust off and do that with.

The last time the Xorg was modified shows as 20 minutes ago, which is I think about the last time this happened anyway.

Re: Blank, unresponsive screen after quitting X

I know this does not help, but I am experiencing exactly the same issue, using the official lts kernel:

 % uname -a
Linux archlinux 4.4.27-1-lts #1 SMP Sat Oct 22 17:17:59 CEST 2016 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Cannot switch to other tty, cannot input any command on console, nothing.  I have to use power switch or <ctr+alt+del>
I've looked at xorg log, nothing interesting there....

Couldn't find a bug opened for Arch.  Hopefully, your troubleshooting will help.

Re: Blank, unresponsive screen after quitting X

I've discovered I have the exact same problem waking the device from suspend, which I didn't used to have.  It's also giving me this black screen of death at boot occasionally.

I haven't had a chance to do much troubleshooting since yesterday.  I'm looking at xorg.conf now and thinking there may be something in here that's causing the problem.

I'm gonna play around with this a bit.  Tell me if I'm either missing something or way off course on this one.

EDIT: I commented out the Device section for the "modesetting" driver and I'm no longer having this problem.  However, the fonts in Chromium and Conky and much of the other non-Gnome stuff are coming through all small for some reason.  I'll see if I can figure out what part of the scaling isn't working anymore. EDIT 2: If I run Chromium directly through startx, the --dpi option does work.  I'm not certain why it is that the DPI scaling doesn't work if I use the Intel driver.

Here is a more relevant Xorg.0.log, with all the wacom Input devices commented out.  Both the "modesetting" and "intel" devices are uncommented.

Re: Blank, unresponsive screen after quitting X

I've found that if I remove /etc/modprobe/i915.conf, this problem ceases to occur.  On the other hand, the touchscreen doesn't work without it.

The options I have enabled:

options i915 enable_guc_submission=Y guc_log_level=3

EDIT: It has something to do with enabling GuC submission.  I'm not sure what that means but the problem doesn't happen when I disable it, and the touchscreen depends on it to work.

Re: Blank, unresponsive screen after quitting X

I have uninstalled xf86-video-intel and removed /etc/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf.  The problem no longer seems to randomly occur at startup, but the computer still fails whenever I kill or attempt to stop the X server.

When I ssh in and startx remotely, I get this output at the end:

xinit: connection to X server lost

waiting for X server to shut down ..........
xinit: X server slow to shut down, sending KILL signal

waiting for server to die ...
xinit: X server refuses to die

If I run ps I can see that it says Xorg is still running, and nothing I can do will kill it.  Furthermore, issuing commands like systemctl reboot don't do anything; the remote shell will tell me that it's been disconnected, but the machine doesn't actually reboot.  If I run dmesg at this point then I don't see anything especially out of the ordinary.

What tools/methods might you suggest I use to dig deeper into this?

Re: Blank, unresponsive screen after quitting X

Ensure the server process isn't SIGSTOP'd ("ps ax | grep Xorg" has a "T" in the state col) and otherwise check whether there's anything interesting in the Xorg log.
Ultimately "gdb --pid `pidof Xorg`" (you'll have to "echo 0 | tee /proc/sys/kernel/yama/ptrace_scope" in case of permission troubles) and dump a backtrace.

If the process doesn't respond to SIGTERM it's either stopped or the main event loop hangs "somewhere" (and gdb tells you "wheresome")
