[SOLVED] USB audio is too loud

Hi.

Sound from a USB audio device is too loud and is muted on values below 35%. Following this guide I added volume-limit = 0.01 to “/usr/share/pulseaudio/alsa-mixer/paths/analog-output.conf.common” at the “Element PCM” section. This solved both problems, however now the volume is too low and changing values of “volume-limit” (0.5, 0.75, 1.0 etc.) doesn't affect on the maximum volume — it stays at the same level.

How can I fine-tune the maximum volume level of my USB sound card with regard what was said above?

Thanks.

Re: [SOLVED] USB audio is too loud

Hello!

The issue that the sound is muted at a certain level is a known bug, see this! If you have low volumes after the suggested fix, maybe the volume adjustment does not work properly, try this.

It is advised to follow the How to post guide when posting on the Arch forum. If one consciously jumps over these elementary steps like reading the wiki and providing necessary information about the problem, one can be regarded as a Help Vampire.

This can be solved either adding volume-limit = 1.00 to /usr/share/pulseaudio/alsa-mixer/paths/analog-output.conf.common into the Element PCM section or load-module module-udev-detect ignore_dB=1 to /etc/pulse/default.pa. I followed the first way, however according to the guide, changing values of “volume-limit” should change the maximum volume. In my case, increasing or decreasing the values change nothing, the volume stays at the same level.

You missed a crucial part of what I wrote, see the arrow below:

@sayonalion The link to the solution you provided contains information from 5 years ago. The link I provided under "see this! is more up to date, please try that solution instead.

Update: And I missed that both our links suggested the same solution.

Re: [SOLVED] USB audio is too loud

onslow77 I understand what you wrote. The problem with loud sound and premature muting can be solved either way. However, after changing configuration the volume is too low and if you choose the first way of solving the problem, changing “volume-limit” doesn't affect on the maximum volume somehow. Is it a bug? Where it can be reported?

Hello!

@sayonalion did you try my suggested soultion (the second one in the #2 post) for fixing low volume?

Re: [SOLVED] USB audio is too loud

onslow77 No, I didn't. I fixed it by running alsamixer, selecting my external sound device and increasing the output volume to the maximum level.

Despite I've solved the problem with low volume, I'd like to have a tool to fine-tune the maximum volume level, so I'm still curious, why increasing and decreasing values of “volume-limit” in “analog-output.conf.common” doesn't affect on the maximum volume anyhow.
