Mate desktop background greyed out

Hello all - I'm using the latest version of Mate gtk3 with the latest amdgpu (non-pro) kernel drivers and mesa. I'm having a problem with Caja, the Mate fork of Nautilus overwriting desktop background picture so all I get is a grey screen. Panel and icons still appear. I have compositing turned off.

I'm pretty sure that it's Caja's work, as the desktop background does briefly appear before Caja loads, and when I stop Caja from managing the desktop the background reappears again.

I think it might be a GTK transparency issue since the Mate terminal transparency is also broken and just shows a grey background whatever I set, plus I have similar problems in Cinnamon. I'm dimly away that there used to be an option in Mate to change the transparency percentage of the background and was wondering if forcing it to 0% would get round the issue, but I can't see any such setting in the latest version.

The fact that I haven't see anyone else with a similar issue makes me wonder if I haven't changed some obscure GTK transparency setting in the distant past which now no longer has a GUI switch. Has anyone got any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Edit: I should probably add that I didn't change anything to cause this issue - I just did a pacman update one day and next time I logged in my background had gone, so maybe one of the underlying libraries has a bug or change its way of doing things.

Re: Mate desktop background greyed out

Well, I switched to the GTK2 version of Mate and have my background back, and I'll stick with that until the GTK3 version is stable.
