OK step by step
- I boot from the Livecd
- make partitions
- mount the root partition to e.g /mnt/arch/
- ./archbootstrap /mnt/arch ftp://ftp.archlinux.de/pub/archlinux
- chroot to /mnt/arch
- set up etc ? What must I do here?
- making kernel The Arch standard kernel & initramfs is installed?
- configure grub
- reboot
Is this right?
Have you tried to turn it off and on again?

I believe you could use Install Guide as a reference to what you should change in config files. Guess you should pay the most attention to rc.conf, fstab and menu.lst (I believe the latter two are somehow "autogenerated" while using normal Arch installer, step which is obviously gonna be omited when using archbootstrap).

That will work for a liveCD too. I've done it a few times.

Last time (about 3 weeks ago) I installed Arch from debian with archboostrap, but you got to remember to install a kernel and setup you fstab.
I had to reboot many, many times, because I frogot to install a kernel, then I needed to exclude the scsi drivers from the ramdisk (my pc froze) and then I notived, that I had no fstab. With knopix being not the fastet way to get a shell prompt it was annoying as hell.

Using LiveCD is just like running some "stationary" distro, except it doesn't sit on HDD. So, there's no difference when installing Arch.

Have you tried with the brand new 0.7.2 install cd ?
Such an issue was discussed a while ago and new cds were supposed to handle correctly external(USB) optical drives.

I have to test the new cd (at least 0.7.2 pre-release cds seemed ok - needs confirmation)...
