vmware-config.pl troubles

okay, so i'm new to arch but have a good amount of experience with linux.  i'm having troubles getting vmware configured appropriately.  whenever i run the configuration utility, it complains about a couple things.  first, it wants to know where the rc0.d to rc6.d directories are.  they're not there so created some bogus ones. no big deal.  next, vmware needs to compile a couple kernel modules.  here i hit a big problem as the /usr/src/linux directory doesn't seem to have complete source?.  It complains that I'm missing some folders (like the net folder, which it is).  So, having searched around a bit, I've gotten the impression that I'll need to download the kernel source and recompile with the original config file to get the full source.  is that correct or am I just missing something really obvious.  :?

Re: vmware-config.pl troubles

okay, so I tried that but then it started complaining about the kernel having never been complied before.  missing files like autoconf.h and version.h.  Which are the messages I got before when I pulled down the kernel source.  So, I'm back to re-compiling the kernel again.

Re: vmware-config.pl troubles

so I pulled down the full source, found the config file and recompiled the kernel. having done all that, the vmware install now goes smoothly.  is there a reason that the default packaged kernel doesn't install with full source?

Space.  The kernel source is very large.

Re: vmware-config.pl troubles

There is a kernel archive on the 0.4 cdrom in the arch directory. It isn't a package but it does have the source if the user needs it.

Re: vmware-config.pl troubles

right. i found that but it's not the source that was used to compile the kernel.  it may be the SAME source but it's not THE source so it's missing all the files the get placed in the directory AFTER compilation, which vmware (and others I'm sure) need.  Anyhoo, I have it all working now.  Thanks for all the help everyone!  ;-)
