[SOLVED] Weird Heating Issues With KDE 5.8.x and Nvidia GPU

Since the upgrade from KDE 5.7.x to 5.8.x my Nvidia 970 GTX card has been alot hotter than before. Now in on the desktop it sits around 61 degrees celsius where before it was sitting at 40 to 45 area. My cpu i7-6700K (overclocked to 4,5 GHz) is running at a cool 33 degrees celsius. When playing a game on steam the GPU drops down to 57 degrees celsius usually. So something is up with KDE 5.8.x. Anybody have bug report or similar issues?

I'm on Plasma 5.8.2 with a GTX 770 and a gpu temp of 29︒C. Using Nvidia dkms proprietary blob (370.28)

I'd say that the OP has some wild going plasmoid which repaints as fast as possible, loading both - plasmashell as well as kwin_x11 on GL updates.

Log out (or just kill plasmashell) and *move* away ~/.config/plasma* to some backup dir. Then re-login.

That could be an option... I will look into it.

I looked at the plasmoids I was running yesterday and tried to kille everything off but no change in temp on my gpu. Is there a way debug what is causing the gpu to that warm?

Re: [SOLVED] Weird Heating Issues With KDE 5.8.x and Nvidia GPU

Not really. Pin the causing process.
Kill everything you don't need, starting with eg. your browser, down to your desktop, then suspend the compositor and ultimately kill the WM - only leaving eg. an xterm alive in which you can run

while true; do nvidia-smi --format=csv,noheader --query-gpu="temperature.gpu"; sleep 5; done

To monitor the temperature.

If you figure it's the plasmashell process, see whether it also happens for the default setup. If not, one of your additions will be it.
If you monitor the temperture with a fancy plasmoid: notably those are prone to cause CPU and GPU load.

Tried to run the above command before I login, so SSDM is running and the GPU still rises to 60 degrees celsius.

SDDM's design is absolutely capable to cause this. Try another DM (try XDM or just startx) and see what happens.

It is SDDM that is causing it. I turned it off with systemctl and my gpu temp went down to 42 very very quickly. Turning it on again made the gpu temp go back up to 60 again. Need to make bug report on that now...

Seemed to have fixed this. I disabled and then reenabled the sddm.service and now my gpu is back 42 degrees weird.
