External monitor does not turn back on when waking up

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad L460 connected via DisplayPort to a Lenovo ThinkVision monitor. I'm running Cinnamon on Arch Linux.

When Cinnamon puts my display to sleep, both monitors power down fine. But then when I touch a key or move the mouse, only the laptop's display turns on. When I unlock the computer, all my windows are on my laptop's screen. I have to turn the monitor off and then on again, at which point Cinnamon will detect the display again and let me move my windows back.

Is there a way to fix this problem, or do I just need to disable power management?

Re: External monitor does not turn back on when waking up

I'm running plasma5 on a notebook that has the same processor and therefore the same graphics card.
I do not have this issue. so I'm guessing it's an issue with cinnamon.

EDIT1
this may not be it hmm I'm using the hdmi-output. so this may also be output-related.

Thanks for the data point! Could also be the monitor, I suppose.

I've temporarily worked around the issue by disabling power management entirely and just wasting a lot of electricity.
