Xorg crashes on launch after system-wide update

Yesterday I ran a system-wide update (kernel and a lot of applications) and my X server crashed in the middle of it. Now every time I run "startx," I see the feh desktop background (but no mouse cursor) for a few seconds, my CPU hangs, and then the X server crashes.

This is on an Asus laptop with Intel GPU.

I've already tried removing my xorg.conf (which other threads have told me is unnecessary anyway), commenting out each line of my xinitrc one by one, and reinstalling X, mesa and vesa - but none of those things seems to have any effect on the issue.

Interestingly, when I run "X -configure," I get the message "no devices detected, no screens found."

Here's my Xorg.0.log:

Re: Xorg crashes on launch after system-wide update

The log tells that xorg has been successfully started and ended in a clean exit. The fact that you see your desktop confirms that.

I would seek the reason of the problem in your DE. Consider seeing “~/.xsession-errors” — probably something crashes early and the X is closed.

Sometimes I seem a bit harsh — don’t get offended too easily!

Re: Xorg crashes on launch after system-wide update

Thanks for your reply. My system doesn't seem be creating a new ~/.xsession-errors file (I have a few old xsession-errors files, but none generated since the crash).

I've tried commenting out all lines that launch programs in my i3 config file - no change in the crash behavior.

I've also tried commenting out the line that launches i3 (as well as the lines that launch feh and load Xresources) in my ~/.xinitrc - still no change in the crash behavior.

I even tried creating a new user "test" and starting a fresh X server - it still crashes.

This may be a red herring, but I do think it's strange that when I run "X -configure," I get the message "no devices detected, no screens found." It almost seems as if the X server connects to my monitors, but thinks it hasn't.

Is there some other way to pinpoint exactly why the X server decides to shut itself down?

EDIT: I just tried starting X with a completely blank .xinitrc file. The following errors showed up in the console:

xf86EnableIOPorts: failed to set IOPL for I/O (Operation not permitted)
xinit: connection to X server lost

I'm open to just uninstalling X and doing a fresh install of it, if necessary - but reinstalling it didn't fix the problem, so there's clearly some other problematic file I'd need to clear out in order to ensure a completely fresh installation.

Re: Xorg crashes on launch after system-wide update

I fixed it by doing a complete uninstall and reinstall of X. This was clearly not the most elegant solution - and tells me nothing about the specific source of the problem - but it worked.

In case this helps anyone with a similar problem... I kept all my config files in place, and simply ran:

pacman -Rd xorg
pacman -Syu
pacman -S xorg

Then I ran startx and everything was back to normal.

Something was clearly broken in my xorg installation, though I still don't know what. But I consider this "Solved," because the problem is fixed.
