Clipit not running from application menu

DE = KDE 5.8.3
When I run clipit from application menu or krunner - it temporarily shows me an icon with loading animation and nothing happens.

• Running clipit from command line works just fine.

• Running clipit with

  kioclient exec file:/usr/share/applications/clipit.desktop

  works just fine.

• Running clipit from app menu with "Run in terminal" options works just fine, but I don't really need a terminal window hanging on my desktop

• I've tried kdebugdialog, but it is really obscure - doesn't write output to file or shell

I also export some env variables on kde startup. Here is a list of them.

I've googled a lot, but clipit is pretty outdated, so there are no similar issues/bugs in related forums nor in their bug list.
For now I just run

clipit 2>1 1>/dev/null &

every time (and feel dirty doing this )
