Browser can DDOS whole system

System: Core i7, 8 gb ram, xfce/Archlinux.
Sort of randomly when between 30-50 tabs are opened in Chromium browser, the browser freezes up and takes the whole system with it. Mouse cursor stops responding, or only does so in 5-minutes intervals, it becomes impossible to open a terminal. The worst thing is that switching to a vt won't work because in this state the login process will timeout before the password can be entered on a vt, after the user name has been entered!
At the same time this freeze up lets network connections time out.
After 5-10 minutes, the browser eventually gets terminated (by the system?) and things go back to normal, except all network connections have been broken.
The same thing can happen with Firefox too.

Is there a way to limit one app's bad behaviour (well it only happens with the webbrowsers) and keep system operability up?

Re: Browser can DDOS whole system

You could try limiting memory use with ulimit (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1484 … ploading-l).

And maybe use the built-in task manager to see which tab is misbehaving and using too much memory.
