[SOLVED] gnome-shell doesn't start when logging out and in again

I have a strange problem with logging into my Gnome session. When I start my computer, logging in the first time works. However, if I log out and then try to log in again, I'm always kicked back to the GDM screen. According to the log, clutter doesn't start because it cannot find a driver. Here's the relevant output by journalctl:

Be shure that you select "Gnome on Xorg" if you are using Nvidia driver. When selecting "Gnome"  you are returning to GDM.

Thank you - that was it! Selecting "GNOME on Xorg" solved my problem.

Bonus question: Why does the "GNOME" entry exist in the first place when it apparently does not do anything sensible?

Gnome 3.22 switched to Wayland session by default. And now it's always "GNOME" in the first place.
But Nvidia driver currently not supported. With nouveau It works as it should.

GNOME - Wayland session
GNOME on Xorg - Xorg session
