Write first what's your WM. And what computer are you using.
My aterm, on old PC and fluxbox is loading about 0,5s

And what terminal? Gnome-terminal is slower than others to start, for example.

I think that gnome-terminal or xfce-terminal. Others don't have *terminal* in name.

Husio and gullible, he said
Arch is getting Slow
That means -IT WAS NOT SLOW PREVIOUSLY.
So it is not a problem with the terminal or WM.
Another thing is that fluxbox on my PC is able to start xterm in 0.024 seconds (found by using time xterm)
But stuff like firefox take about 3
Be yourself, because you are all that you can be

thanx for replying
yeah as ScriptDevil said .it was fast and realy fast if compared with my fc5 .
but now when i open gnome-terminal it takes about 30-45 secs !!
arch was opening the terminal in about a sec before !
am running p4 2000 mega
512 ddr ram
fx5200 vga
gigabyte mb
but am sure it's not a hardware problem !

Do you have a loopback device?

On my desk I have a workstation.

In other words... In rc.conf, under "INTERFACES", is "lo" listed? E.g. 'INTERFACES=(lo eth0)'.
Also, what filesystem are you using? If it's XFS, try installing xfsdump and running xfs_fsr - XFS can get very fragmented after a while.

hi and sorry for the late reply
yes i have loopback device
in rc.conf there is
lo="lo 127.0.0.1"
eth0="dhcp"
INTERFACES=(lo eth0)
and am using ex3 fs
any suggestions ?

A friend of mine had this trouble when a network device was active, but the DNS server was down. I take it your internet connection from that computer is ok?
Is the delay the same when you run gnome-terminal as root?
Is there any error/warning output in a terminal when you run gnome-terminal from it?

is your hostname set correctly in rc.conf and in /etc/hosts?

wait the 30 seconds or whatever, then run `strace gnome-terminal > gterm.txt` and see what system call it's getting stuck on.

Since we entered summer, I'd check kernel warnings about CPU temperatures... especially if you have a Prescott or similar CPU.

Wait a minute, ext3? Is it directory-indexed? If not, you might want to try enabling indexing for it... Boot using a live CD or set of Arch install floppies or a pen drive or whatever, and run:
tune2fs -O dir_index /dev/hdXY
e2fsck -fD /dev/hdXY
on the relevent partitions.

sorry for being late again .am having exams
cpu temp at it's ranges accordng to " cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THRM/* "
but i guess the hard drive is the one is getting too hot .
any way after cooling the hard drive the terminal will load at it's normal speed .
thanx alot guys .
but 1 more thing >> iphitus
is there a relationship between getting slow and networking ?
coz my ip was neither set at hosts.conf nor at rc.conf
thanx again

hmm I have a similar problem. When I run things as a normal user it takes a long time for them to start (gcalctoo = 15second start time.) However, where I open a terminal and run programs as root they start much faster. (gcalctool is in less than 2 seconds) suggestions?

Your IP doesn't have to be set there, it is often recieved automaticly over DHCP. As you didn't say anything of defect network connection, I assume you use DHCP. Your hostname has to be set though.

Does it still launch slow if you run it as user again after running as root? It may have been something taking time to use harddrive for example, but when running as root it's cached...
Do you get any errors when running gcalctool in a terminal (as user)?

No it is still slow even after runing as root. I get no errors, in the terminal.
Also, after I log out and log back in it is back to normal, but after a while it slows down again.

i've had this issue aswell and would REALLY appreciate some clearance.
root just seem to be faster... Is this because when you run as root the computer doesn't have to check for permissions etc EVERYTIME it tries to open a file? Because if this was the culprit linux really needs some faster permission checking code! ASAP
No, i don't have any problems with host or anything like that and i don't experience the big slowdowns like the above posters do.

I also think, then I run in KDE menu 'System > More Applications > File Manager - Super User Mode', then Konqueror faster work. But I do not known why.

I also belive I heard root runs everything with higher priority (like if using "nice"), this might be related if the system is low on resources.
If it slows down first after a while, you might want to check your RAM and swap usage - this sounds like how sluggish my computer used to go after leaving azureus on for a few days... In that case all my memory and tons of swap were used -> slowdown.

I only had it on for a few hours.... Also, I don't get this kind of slow down with most other distros. My ram was btwn 184-220 usage and I have 512....not sure about CPU speed

ok, so apparently the slow down only ocurrs when my internet is under "heavy" use, such as downloading from gnutella or runing an update and surfing the internet. THis is odd.

Whats your RAM and CPU load situation like when you run these things? I find that Firefox can quite easily take 100% CPU load, and bit torrent very happily gobbles up all of my RAM and pushes me into swap. Combine Firefox and bit torrent, it can make for some fun times
EDIT: And as a thought, fsck all your partitions and see how fragmented they are.
