Re: [unsolved] Bittorrent extremly slow

Well, commenting out the lines about ipv4 packets in sysctl.conf seems not to do anything... The Knoppix DVD torrent still crawls, and BT still thinks I'm firewalled, even with the right ports open.

Gullible - have you done this?

have you limited the amount of upload that your client can use?

I'm on the Knoppix torrent now, and I'm getting around 100KB/s, with 61 seeds and 19 peers.

Yes, I've messed around with the upload limit. Does not do a damn thing.

Don't worry, you're not the only one.

(Tried enabling packet forwarding, rebooted. If anything, it slowed down internet access. :? I could disable SYN cookies, but that sounds like a dumb idea... I've had enough bloody security problems already!)

Anyone notice anything else fishy with any config files?

Re: [unsolved] Bittorrent extremly slow

I use bittorrent regularly for anime, downloading about 400MB/week.  Depending on the seeders, I usually average about 50-60kbps, with a max of around 100.

Re: [unsolved] Bittorrent extremly slow

some more comparison data, fwiw --

i started downloading the knoppix-dvd torrent on arch, and then booted knoppix on my laptop for a comparison. in the time it took knoppix to boot, etc., about 5 min, the arch download was at 438kb/s, with 70 seeds and 10 peers. that's the highest dl speed i've ever gotten on any torrent.

i started the laptop torrent, and after 10 minutes i couldn't get much more than 7-8kbs, which seemed about right since most of the bandwidth was being used in arch. so i killed the arch torrent, and let the knoppix torrent go another 10 minutes. i still couldn't get much more than the original 7-8 in knoppix, even in successive tries with all the ports forwarded to that IP.

next, i rebooted my laptop into slack, ssh'd into my web server (with all ports going there this time), and started the torrent. after 10 min. it was at about 45bps. out of curiosity, i killed it, ssh'd from arch -- not that it would make any difference -- but actually it did: 417bps after ~5 min.  i killed that and started it up again from slack, and after a few minutes it's now up to ~150kbs and climbing.

so what does all that mean? i have no idea tongue but it seems like it's really just a matter of the torrent and connecting to good seeds, and whatever else is involved at the most basic levels in this kind of networking (which is beyond me, at least). over 400bps is the highest d/l speed i've ever gotten for a torrent, and that was in arch after only a couple of minutes. so no worries here.

Re: [unsolved] Bittorrent extremly slow

I have a download rate about 540 kbs on a windows machine, meanwhile the archlinux one, downloading the same(!) file at the same(!) time in the same(!) network environment recieves up to 7 kbs only.
:?

Re: [unsolved] Bittorrent extremly slow

Weird... My problem was apparently that I had ports 6881-6889 open, when it should have been 6881-6999.

Are you using Azureus on your Win box, and Bittorrent on your Linux machine? Azureus uses only one port IIRC...

Re: [unsolved] Bittorrent extremly slow

Part of the problem might be your ISP. Mine seems to block huge ranges of ports at certain times - BT and other such software works fine in the afternoon but acts as if firewalled in the evening, for instance.

Re: [unsolved] Bittorrent extremly slow

try going through the peer list. If many are snubbed or chocked, it is not Arch's fault

Has somebody gotten fast speeds? I'm thinking it might be a problem with file conflicts?
