[Solved] Desktop overlayed with opaque white screen in Cinnamon
I am having a peculiar problem after the last Cinnamon update. When I login, my desktop is overlayed with a opaque white screen that gobbles up the wallpaper as well as Conky. When I logout, the overlay goes away for a couple seconds before the logout action takes me to lightdm login screen.
I have recorded the behavior in this video
Things I have tried so far which didn't work:
1. Tried removing Conky from session start.
2. Changed desktop theme to a different one.
3. Disabled "Play backgrounds as a slideshow" in background settings.
Any help in getting rid of this overlay will be appreciated.

This looks like it *is* the desktop - does conky run on the root window?

I start conky from an entry in the Cinnamon's "Startup Applications" setting window.
If that white overlay *is* the desktop, how do I change wallpaper and draw conky over it?

no idea about cinnamon configuration, but you need "own_window true" in your conky config and eg. "own_window_type dock" to ensure it's somehow on top of things (see "man conky" for more details)
To check whether the white thing is the desktop window, run "xprop" from a terminal and pick the white area (not where your also whitish conky resides) when the cursor turns into a "+"

Setting own_window_type to dock brought conky on top of the white overlay!! Woohoo!!!! Thanks!

That's totally your desktop ;-)
Still no idea about wallpaper configuration, but the desktop seems powered by nemo (the filemanager) so you may be lucky in its settings.

Thank you for pointing out that nemo is my culprit. This thread talks about similar problem. I tried
nemo --quitas suggested in that thread and it really worked!
Apparently, nemo is set to show desktop icons and it is drawing it's own desktop to do that. I installed dconf-editor and set the
org > nemo > desktop > show-desktop-iconskey to false. And now, the annoying overlay is gone permanently!
