libvirtd/virsh cannot save state of a VM

I recently got back into using virt-manager instead of Virtualbox and have pretty much everything working fine and dandy (yay for suspending the host while a guest is still running!).

The only thing that I can't get working (though I really remember it working a year ago, is closing the machine whilst saving its state to disk.

I figured out the command the virt-manager GUI is calling is pretty much

virsh managedsave domainname

If I run this, the virt-manager viewer changes to "Viewer disconnected" and after what seems like an attempted "save state to disk", I get this output:

error: Failed to save domain domainname state
error: operatie mislukte: domein draait niet

The last is in Dutch, because although I ran the command with LANG=C, not everything is translated. Probably cause my system booted to a Dutch locale. The last sentence means nothing more than: error: operation failed, domain is not running.

I have looked around on the web, in the documentation, but can't find anything related. Why am I unable to save the state of my VM?
